No. 19 'Eaters Take Series at CSF, 7-4

FULLERTON, Calif. --- No. 19 UC Irvine won its first series against Cal State Fullerton since 2009 in similar fashion to Friday night's victory with a 7-4 win Saturday night at Goodwin Field.

Damla Dinger
UCI (28-9, 10-4) started Saturday's game with a bang off the bat of junior Adrian Damla. He rocked a ball out to right field clearing the fence for a two-run shot and putting the 'Eaters up 2-0 in the first. After loading the bases and coming up empty in the second inning, the Anteaters put it into action in the third scoring the first two on sacrifice flies, and finishing with a two-out RBI single from Christian Koss for a three-run inning and pushing UCI's lead to 5-0 in the third.

Giving Them Life
UCI built its lead to 6-0 entering the seventh inning. Tanner Brubaker got the first out and seemed to have a second out sewn up, but Mikey Filia uncharacteristically dropped a fly ball putting Brett Borgogno on second base. The next two hitters reached on singles scoring Borgogno and lifting Brubaker who lasted 6.1 innings. John Vergara was called upon and helped limit the damage, but Cal State Fullerton (16-22, 4-7) had some confidence and now trailed 6-2 after seven.

Closing the Door
The 'Eaters got a run back thanks to Filia atoning for his error with a two-out single, but Fullerton fought back with two more runs on infield singles and a high chopper to close it to 7-4. UCI once again called on Taylor Rashi to help seal the victory, and he started off by striking out his two hitters in the eighth. He continued that on into the ninth going 1-2-3 for the victory and series win

Final Score: No. 19 UC Irvine 7, Cal State Fullerton 4
Six Anteaters came through with multiple hits including Koss and Sam Ireland who had doubles. Griffin Mazur once again reached four times adding an RBI. Damla's home run was just the second of his career and first since Mother's Day of his freshman year. He led the way Saturday with two runs and RBIs. Sahid Valenzuela had a pair of hits of CSF's eight, and Guangorena had a pair of RBIs in a pinch-hit effort.

Pitchers of Record
Brubaker got his first win in four starts improving to 5-2 with his sixth quality start allowing just two unearned runs in 6.1 innings without a walk. Taylor Rashi's dominance continued with 1.2 scoreless to pick up his 11th save of the year. He's extended his shutout streak to 32 innings pitched and has retired the last 22 hitters he's faced. Michael Knorr lasted just three innings for CSF allowing five runs on six hits now with a 3-4 record on the year

Next Up
The 'Eaters can complete the sweep Sunday, Apr. 28, at 1:00 p.m. with Trenton Denholm (7-1, 1.66) going for UCI against CSF's closer, Michael Weisberg, who will make the start. For the Anteaters, it would be their second sweep all-time of the Titans with the other coming in 1971. The series win in itself is an accomplishment being just the fifth in the history of the matchup and third since the program's rebirth in 2002, all of which have been at Goodwin Field
