
'Eaters Make Their Way to Hawaii for Big West Championships

IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team will be looking to defend its Big West Tournament title on the islands as it travels to Lihue, Kauai, for the conference championships, April 29-30.
The first two rounds of the Big West Championships will be held on Monday, while the final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday at the par-72, 6,991-yard Wailua Golf Course. UCI's 5-count-4 lineup includes Ramiz Jamal, Anthony Truong, Jonathan Kang, Chris Casey and Matt Gunson.
The Anteaters are seeded fifth and are scheduled to tee off Monday at 8:20 a.m. (HT)/11:20 a.m. (PT), alongside No. 4 UC Santa Barbara and No. 6 Cal Poly. Cal State Fullerton is the No. 1 seed as the only Big West member in the top-100 of the most recent national rankings. The Titans are grouped with No. 2 UC Davis and No. 3 Long Beach State. The third pairing for the first day of action features No. 7 Hawai'i, No. 8 UC Riverside and No. 9 CSUN.
STORYLINES
• UC Irvine won the program's eighth Big West championship in 2018, which is tops among all active league members.
• The Anteaters return juniors Jonathan Kang and Ramiz Jamal from last year's lineup.
• Jamal is currently tops on the squad with a 72.45 scoring average and two top-10 finishes this year.
• He tied for ninth at the Sacramento State Invitational with a 212 (-4), shooting a career-low 67 in the final round.
• The Orange County native was also eighth at the Nick Watney Invitational with a career-best 5-under 211 (72-68-71).
• Kang claimed runner-up honors at the spring season-opening Anteater Invitational.
• He matched his personal best with a 69 in the final round to finish at 4-under 212.
• Junior Anthony Truong (73.08) had his best score of the year at the Redhawk Invitational, carding a 210 (69-70-71).

• The 'Eaters, who were seeded seventh, pulled off an epic upset by claiming the 2018 Big West title.
• They put together their three best rounds of the year to edge No. 1 seed UC Davis at 12-under 852 (284-285-283).
• Jonathan Kang finished fifth at the 2018 conference championship with a season-best 4-under 212 (69-71-72).
• Kang was recognized for his performance as he received All-Big West honorable mention distinction.
• Ramiz Jamal also tied for 11th at even-par 216 (71-75-70).

• Ramiz Jamal recorded his first collegiate hole-in-one in the second round of the Anteater Invitational on Feb. 11.
• Jamal aced the par-3, 202-yard 12th hole at Big Canyon Country Club.
• This is the second year in a row an 'Eater had a hole-in-one as David Kim did it at the 2018 John Burns Intercollegiate.
