IRVINE, Calif. --- No. 19 UC Irvine survived a wild Tuesday night see-saw affair at USC for a 12-9 victory in 10 innings
No Time Wasted
The Anteaters (26-9, 8-4) put their first six runners on base and scored their first five with help from five straight singles to lead 5-0 after the first inning and knock out USC (17-21-1, 8-9-1) starter Brian Gursky
Trojans Respond
USC found its stride knocking a pair of two-run home runs on its way to tying things up at 5-5 in the fourth. The Trojans added a four-spot in the sixth inning for nine unanswered runs and suddenly lead 9-5. Meanwhile, USC reliever Chandler Champlain rendered the Anteater offense helpless no-hitting the 'Eaters for five innings allowing just a single baserunner on a walk
Back Even
UCI finally solved Champlain scoring a pair of runs off him thanks to
Andre Antone's two-run double giving way to reliever Carson Lambert. UCI would greet him rudely via
Adrian Damla's bat driving home the tying runs on a single to make it a brand new ballgame at 9-9 after the top of the fifth
Calm Before the Storm
The next three-and-a-half innings were the polar opposite from the first two-thirds of the game with no runs or hits from either side pushing the game into extra innings.
Taylor Rashi was called upon for the 'Eaters while USC brought in starter for most of the year in Kyle Hurt.
Wild Ending
A wild game that saw a four-run and five-run lead evaporate deserved a wild ending. The 'Eaters had nobody on bases with two outs before
Sam Ireland drew a four-pitch walk.
Mike Peabody singled to keep it going, and after a balk moving the runners up, Hurt bounced a wild pitch that shot to the backstop and brought home Ireland for the go-ahead run. After
Brandon Lewis was hit by a pitch, Damla swung and missed at a wild pitch, but catcher Tyler Lozano's throw was wide and not in time to score a second run. For good measure,
Konnor Zickefoose singled home Lewis from third base completing the comeback
Final Score: No. 19 UC Irvine 12, USC 9
The Anteaters enjoyed three-RBI days from Damla and Antone. Damla had a two-hit game along with
Griffin Mazur who reached base four times while driving in two runs.
Mike Peabody scored all three times he reached as the 'Eaters had nine players record a hit and all nine starters scored a run. USC had hits from eight starters and runs from seven. Tyler Lozano led them with three RBIs off two hits while Clay Owens and Brady Shockey each delivered a two-run home run
Pitchers of Record
Taylor Rashi extended his shutout streak to 29.2 innings sitting down all six hitters he faced to improve to 3-0. Anteater starter
John Vergara allowed two runs over 2.1 innings as four of the six Anteater pitchers allowed a run to score. Bocko struck out four in three innings while not issuing a walk. Kyle Hurt fell to 0-6 for USC allowing three runs in 1.2 innings. Champlain tossed 88 pitches over 5.2 innings finishng with four runs to his name after going five hitless off the start
