IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team makes its way to Santa Cruz for the 73rd Western Intercollegiate presented by Topgolf, April 15-17. The three-day tournament will be held at the par-70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Club.
The Anteaters are part of an elite 13-team field that features four schools ranked among the top-25: No. 8 USC, No. 10 Cal, No. 14 Pepperdine and No. 21 Stanford. They will also be joined by No. 39 Oregon, No. 45 Arizona, No. 48 Colorado State, Hawai'i, San Diego State, UTEP, Washington and host San José State. UC Irvine's 6-count-5 lineup consists of Ramiz Jamal, Anthony Truong, Chris Casey, Nathan Irwin, Matt Gunson and Jonathan Kang.
GOLF Channel will televise the Western Intercollegiate with live coverage airing in primetime Monday and Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. (PDT), and on Wednesday from 1-4 p.m. (PDT).
STORYLINES
• UC Irvine has one team victory in 2018-19, winning the Cal Poly Match Play Championship, March 25-26.
• Ramiz Jamal is tops on the squad with a 72.63 scoring average and two top-10 finishes this year.
• He tied for ninth at the Sacramento State Invitational with a 212 (-4), shooting a career-low 67 in the final round.
• The Orange County native was also eighth at the Nick Watney Invitational with a career-best 5-under 211 (72-68-71).
• Anthony Truong (72.95) is coming off his best outing as he carded a 210 (69-70-71) at the Redhawk Invitational.
• Jonathan Kang claimed runner-up honors at the spring season-opening Anteater Invitational.
• Kang matched his personal best with a 69 in the final round to finish at 4-under 212.
• Jamal, Truong and Kang have combined for 19 rounds under par, including nine sub-70 scores.
• UC Irvine won the program's eighth Big West championship in 2018, which is tops among all active league members.
• The Anteaters lost five seniors to graduation following the 2017-18 campaign, but have reloaded with six new players.
UCI AT THE WESTERN INTERCOLLEGIATE
• This marks the 10th-straight year UC Irvine will be competing in the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club.
• Last year, the Anteaters were 14th overall and were led by recent graduate David Kim, who tied for 24th.
• The 'Eaters have a high finish of second multiple times at the Western Intercollegiate, most recently in 2008.
LAST TIME OUT
• UC Irvine finished eighth out of 18 teams at the Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay Golf Course, April 1-2.
• Anthony Truong led the 'Eaters as he tied for 21st with a 54-hole score of 210 (69-70-71).
• Freshman Matt Gunson had the best round of his collegiate career with a 3-under 68 over the final 18. He tied for 44th.
PERFECT SHOT
• Junior Ramiz Jamal recorded his first collegiate hole-in-one in the second round of the Anteater Invitational on Feb. 11.
• Jamal aced the par-3, 202-yard 12th hole at Big Canyon Country Club.
• This is the second year in a row an 'Eater had a hole-in-one as David Kim did it at the 2018 John Burns Intercollegiate.
PRO DEBUT
• Former All-American and Big West Player of the Year John Chin is the first UC Irvine alum to make the PGA Tour.
• He finished among the top-25 on the Web.com Tour money list to secure his PGA Tour membership card for 2018-19.
• Chin made the cut at the Sanderson Farms Championship, Farmers Insurance Open and Puerto Rico Open.
• He graduated from UC Irvine in 2010, leading the 'Eaters to three Big West titles and four-straight NCAA Regionals.
• Chin also helped the 2008 squad advance to the NCAA Championships for the third time in program history.
