PROVO, Utah – UC Irvine rebounded with a 3-1 victory over No. 10 BYU (25-23, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22) at Smith Fieldhouse Saturday evening.

The Anteaters improve to 14-5 overall, while BYU goes to 9-6 on the year.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
> A trio of Anteaters recorded double-digit kills led by Joel Schneidmiller with 14, hitting .455 (14-4-22)
>Outside hitter Aaron Koubi had 12 kills followed by Alexandre Nsakanda with 11
>Middle blocker Austin Wilmot had a match-high seven block assists
>BYU was led by Gabi Garcia Fernande with a match-high 19 kills
>The Cougars held a slight edge in hitting .300-.299, but UCI would win the battle at the net 12.5-9.5, and at the service line, 5-3

TURNING POINTS
FIRST SET
>BYU would jump out to an early 5-2 lead with the help of three Anteater miscues
>The Cougars scored three in a row, all on UCI errors to move out to an 18-14 lead
>Trailing 23-20, UCI would rally with the final five points to take the set 25-23. The Anteaters used two kills each by Alexandre Nsakanda and Joel Schneidmiller plus a final ball-handling error by the Cougars to complete the comeback

SECOND SET
>UCI took a 12-9 lead on a kills by Austin Wilmot and Nsakanda and a Schneidmiller ace
>BYU would go on a 5-1 run to move in front 14-13
>Another 5-1 spurt by the Cougars extended the lead to 20-16
>BYU would close out the set on yet another 5-1 run to win 25-19

THIRD SET
>UCI broke open the set on a BYU service error and kills by Karl Apfelbach and Patrick Sohacki, 17-14
>A kill by Schneidmiller gave UCI a 20-16 advantage, but BYU would score the next two forcing an Anteater timeout
>The Cougars would catch the Anteaters at 23-23 on a UCI attack error
>A kill by Apfelbach was followed by a block by Sohacki and Scheidmiller to give UCI the 25-23 victory

FOURTH SET
>With BYU leading 4-2, UCI would score five straight, including a kill and ace by Apfelbach to open a 7-4 advantage
>A Cougar service error plus a kill by Schneidmiller and an ace by Apfelbach forced a BYU timeout, 17-13
>Another BYU service error and a block by Sohacki and Schneidmiller moved the advantage to 19-14
>The Anteaters would hold a 23-22 lead before Koubi would end the match with a pair of kills, 25-22
>UCI would hit just .129 (10-6-26), but the Cougars would hit .129 (13-9-31)

NOTES
>Opposite Karl Apfelbach came off the bench to spark UCI with five kills, two aces and four blocks
>UCI snapped a three-match losing streak with the win
