IRVINE, Calif. - With two victories last week, the Anteaters maintain their strong play and have won four straight matches. UC Irvine will continue its home-stand with four matches over the course of three days, beginning with Gonzaga on Monday at 1:00 p.m. The Anteaters will then host a double-header on Tuesday, taking on Navy and Quinnipiac, and then complete the week against Utah on Wednesday.
 
STORYLINES
• Senior Mason Hansen is on a three-match win streak, and improved to 3-0 at the No. 3 singles position.
• Hansen and freshman Aaron Bailey lead the team with five dual-match singles wins each.
• Senior Luis Lopez went 2-0 last week, earning his first victories at the No. 1 singles position this season.
• Senior Sasha Krasnov got off to a hot start, winning his first three singles matches of the year.
• Krasnov did not play in the team's wins over Boston College and Villanova.
• Lopez and junior Bruce Man-Son-Hing remain undefeated in doubles with a 6-0 record at No. 3.
• Hansen and junior Daniel Gealer improved to 6-1 overall as a pair from the No. 2 and 3 doubles positions.
• UC Irvine has seven returning letterwinners from a 2017-18 squad that finished with a 16-12 record.
• The 'Eaters made their fourth-straight appearance in the Big West semifinals last year.
• Lopez earned first-team All-Big West accolades in singles with a 15-8 record, playing primarily at No. 1.
• Lopez and Gealer also received an All-Big West Honorable Mention nod in doubles.
• Krasnov garnered 2018 All-Big West Honorable Mention recognition in singles.
• Senior Vatsal Bajpai and Man-Son-Hing took home first-team All-Big West doubles honors.
• Hansen earned his second-straight All-Big West award in doubles, playing alongside recent grad Luca Marquard.
• UCI was a 2017-18 ITA All-Academic Team with six players earning individual Scholar-Athlete honors.
 
LAST TIME OUT
UC Irvine defeated Boston College 5-2 in their first match last week. Mason Hansen and Daniel Gealer opened with a 6-3 victory at the No. 2 position. Bruce Man-Son-Hing and Luis Lopez then clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at No. 3. In singles play, Hansen improved to 3-0 at the No. 3 position with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Markus Nordby. Vatsal Bajpai also upended Wills Tutecky in three sets before Lopez took down Derek Austin 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 to clinch the match for the Anteaters. It was Lopez's first win at the top of the lineup this season.
 
On Tuesday afternoon, UCI dominated Villanova (8-3) with a 6-1 victory. Hansen/Gealer and Man-Son-Hing/Lopez set the tone early once again with wins in each of their matches to secure the doubles point. In singles play, Hansen improved his unbeaten streak to three with a victory over Thomas Dodson 6-1, 6-2. At No. 4, Aaron Bailey defeated Charlie Schuls 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, and freshman Mike Mkrtchian got his first action this season, dispatching Daniel Martinez 6-4, 6-2.
  
VERSUS THE OPPONENTS
The Gonzaga Bulldogs (8-2) are winners of four straight and are led by juniors Sam Feit and Kyle Everly, who are each 6-1 in dual singles play this season. Feit and senior Ruadhan O'Sullivan were named to the All-WCC second team in doubles last season, while O'Sullivan was a second team selection in singles. The Anteaters are 9-1 overall against the Bulldogs, including a 6-1 victory last season.
 
Navy (14-5) visits UC Irvine with the Patriot League's reigning Rookie and Player of the Year, Andrew Ton, who is 7-3 in dual singles play this season. Freshman Derrick Thompson leads the team with nine dual singles victories.
 
Quinnipiac (4-4) has won two straight, and looks to lean on sophomore Hielke Moore and southern California native junior Patrick Cachapero, both of whom were named to the All-MAAC Second Team last season.
 
Utah (12-3) has won six straight, and will face USC and UCLA before their match with UC Irvine. The Utes are led by senior Dan Little, who was a Pac-12 honorable mention selection in singles last year, and has already defeated three nationally ranked players this season.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Next week, the Anteaters complete their nine-match home-stand, facing Middlebury (0-0) on Monday and taking on Eastern Washington (1-7) on Thursday.
