IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team heads to the Pacific Northwest for the Redhawk Invitational at the par-72 Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Park, Wash., April 1-2.
The first two rounds will take place on Monday, beginning at 8 a.m., while the final 18 holes are set for Tuesday, also with an 8 a.m. start.
The Anteaters are part of a 19-team field highlighted by three Pac-12 schools that are ranked among the top-70 in the nation - No. 41 UCLA, No. 58 Oregon State and No. 69 Utah. UCI will also be going up against Cal Baptist, Drexel, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Idaho, No. 82 Indiana, Little Rock, Northern Colorado, Rutgers, Sacramento State, Seton Hall, UT Arlington, No. 81 Washington, Winthrop and host Seattle U.
STORYLINES
• Chambers Bay Golf Course was the site of the 2015 U.S. Open, and also hosted the 2010 U.S. Amateur.
• UC Irvine's 5-count-4 lineup will consist of Ramiz Jamal, Anthony Truong, Chris Casey, Nathan Irwin and Matt Gunson.
• The same five are coming off a team victory at the Cal Poly Match Play where they beat CSUN, Utah State and UCSB.
• Jamal is tops on the squad with a 72.75 scoring average and two top-10 finishes this year.
• He tied for ninth at the Sacramento State Invitational with a 212 (-4), shooting a career-low 67 in the final round.
• The Orange County native was also eighth at the Nick Watney Invitational with a career-best 5-under 211 (72-68-71).
• Truong (73.44) added a top-20 showing at the Nick Watney Invite, registering a season-best 1-under 215.
• He has shot six rounds below par with a season-best 68 at the Bill Cullum Invitational.
• Jonathan Kang claimed runner-up honors at the spring season-opening Anteater Invitational.
• Kang matched his personal best with a 69 in the final round to finish at 4-under 212.
• UC Irvine won the program's eighth Big West championship in 2018, which is tops among all active league members.
• The Anteaters lost five seniors to graduation following the 2017-18 campaign, but have reloaded with six new players.
LAST TIME OUT
• UCI won the Cal Poly Match Play Tournament at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande, March 25-26.
• The 'Eaters earned a 3.5-1.5 victory over UC Santa Barbara in the finals to claim the team title.
• They also defeated CSUN in the first round and Utah State in the semifinals by identical 4-1 scores.
• Anthony Truong and Matt Gunson both went 3-0 in their individual matches.
• It was the Anteaters' second Cal Poly Match Play championship as they also took first in 2015.
PERFECT SHOT
• Junior Ramiz Jamal recorded his first collegiate hole-in-one in the second round of the Anteater Invitational on Feb. 11.
• Jamal's ace came on the par-3, 202-yard 12th hole at Big Canyon Country Club.
• This is the second year in a row an 'Eater carded a hole-in-one.
• Recent graduate David Kim accomplished the feat at the 2018 John A. Burns Intercollegiate.
THE BIG THREE
• Juniors Ramiz Jamal (72.75), Anthony Truong (73.44) and Jonathan Kang (73.89) have led the 'Eaters in 2018-19.
• Jamal has been the team's top performer in four of six stroke play tournaments with a pair of top-10 finishes.
• Kang was also UCI's top finisher at the Anteater Invitational (2nd) and Visit Stockton Pacific Invite (11th).
• The trio has combined for 17 rounds under par, including eight sub-70 scores.
