Team Effort Lifts UC Irvine to Win Over Hawaii on Homecoming

IRVINE, Calif. – It was a total team effort in UC Irvine's 67-56 win over Hawaii In front of a loud 3,524 fans at the Bren Events Center on Homecoming.
 
Nine of the 10 Anteaters that played recorded at least two points with all 10 grabbing at least one rebound.
 
UCI improves to 21-5 on the year and 9-1 in the Big West. The Anteaters have won the last seven in a row and improve to 9-2 at home.
 
Hawaii falls to 14-9 overall and 5-4 in the conference.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Elston Jones posted his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds
>Max Hazzard paced UCI with a game-high 13 points, going 5-10 from the field and 3-8 from long distance
>Jonathan Galloway was one shy of his career-high with 13 rebounds to go with eight points
>Tommy Rutherford scored all eight of his points in the first half
>UCI shot 46.7 percentage from the floor (28-60), hitting 8-24 from three-point range (33.3)
>Hawaii was led by Jack Purchase and Sheriff Drammeh with 11 points each
>The Warriors were 11-16 from the free throw line (68.8), while UCI was 3-4 (75.0)  
> UCI controlled the boards, 40-28, and out-scored the 'Bows 34-16 in the paint
 
TURNING POINTS
FIRST HALF

>A basket by Tommy Rutherford was followed by a dunk by Elston Jones to give UCI an 8-4 lead at 15:27
>Eyassu Worku hit a jumper (8:47) before Max Hazzard drained a three-pointer to extended the lead to 18-11 at 8:19
>The Anteaters went on a 6-0 run which included a basket down low by Rutherford (6:06), a free throw by Robert Cartwright (5:25) and a three-pointer by Welp from the top of the arc with 4:36 remaining in the half gave UCI a 24-14 cushion
>Evan Leonard would knock down a three-pointer as time expired to send UCI in to the lockerroom with a 33-18 lead
 
SECOND HALF
>Hawaii opened the second half out-scoring UCI 14-5 to narrow the Anteater lead to 38-32 at 15:19
>A bucket by Jones and a three-pointer by Worku followed to make the gap 43-32 at 13:56
>The crowd ignited when Robert Cartwright threaded the defense with a perfect pass to Galloway for a layup at 9:32 then after a Hawaii layup, Hazzard drained a three with 8:49 to go, 52-41 
> A thundering rebound dunk by Galloway forced a Hawaii timeout as the Anteaters went up 58-46 at 4:56
>Hawaii scored five in a row out of the timeout to close to 58-51 (3:54), but a layup by Galloway (3:29) and another Hazzard trey erased the run, 63-51 (2:52)

"I thought Galloway and Elston were fabulous tonight. Our defense was really difficult for them to score on. It makes us hard to beat when we are locked in. I am pleased we were able to rise to the occasion tonight in front of a big crowd."

>UCI extended its winning streak against Hawaii to four, sweeping the season series 
>It's the eighth time this season Hazzard has led the team in scoring
>Six different Anteaters hit a three-pointer
>Hazzard has hit a three in 18 straight games
>Galloway recorded double-digit rebounds for the second consecutive game and the ninth time this year
> Hazzard recorded his 143rd career 3-pointer which put him at No. 10 all-time in UCI's three-point field goals made list, surpassing Scott Brooks and Travis Souza (142)
