Anteaters Begin Action in Albuquerque

The UC Irvine women's indoor track & field team kicked off action at the Don Kirby Collegiate Invitational Friday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
 
Junior Brianna Villanueva finished 15th out of 44 competitors in the weight throw with a personal-record 56-01. She moved up to second in program history, joining teammate Barbara Coward as the only two Anteaters to throw for over 56 feet. It was Villanueva's third PR in as many meets as she entered the 2019 campaign with a best of 49-03.5.
 
Senior Barbara Coward, who set the current school record on Jan. 18, came in 16th with a toss of 55-08.5, while classmate Alison Meegan added a top-30 showing (51-01.5).
 
Sophomore Natalie Koppel took 30th in the long jump at 17-09.5. Junior Tatyana Hamlett was also 40th with an indoor personal-record 17-05.5.
 
On the track, freshman Destiny Whitaker crossed the finish line in 1:39.83 to place 15th in the 600m. Her time ranks sixth on UCI's all-time charts. Senior Hallie Pullum came in 20th (1:44.89).
 
Senior Hope Bushnell led four 'Eaters in the 200m with a season-best 24.98. Freshman Zani Meaders also notched a personal-record 25.29, which ranks sixth in indoor program history. Senior Mychal Robinson (26.26) and junior Cecily Montanez (26.37) posted season bests.
 
Freshman Briana Johnson was UC Irvine's top finisher in the unseeded 400m, clocking in at 59.84 seconds (44th). Senior Julia Sambvani wasn't far behind in 46th (60.16), while Montanez was 59th (61.70). It was the first 400m of the year for all three Anteaters.
 
UC Irvine continues action at the Don Kirby Collegiate Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 9. A full day of events gets underway with the shot put at 8:30 a.m. (PST).
