Cameron Lee is one of the Anteaters' two upperclassmen. On such a young team, her veteran leadership is integral to UCI's overall success. In the fall, she had two top-20 finishes and led the 'Eaters with a 75.50 scoring average. In this Q&A segment, Cameron talks about her experience at UC Irvine and the connection she shares with her teammates.
Q: What made you want to come to UCI?
A: I knew that UCI is a very well-rounded school with both athletics and academics. Coach Julie was really welcoming and I knew that I wanted to play on her team.
Q: You hit a hole in one at the U.S. Women's Amateur Qualifier. What is the feeling like?
A: That was my first hole in one so I had never experienced that before! I was excited and in shock, but I knew I had to stay pretty calm because I still had to play well for the rest of the round.
Q: When did you start playing golf competitively? What is your fondest memory with golf?
A: I started playing competitively at 11 years old. I remember spending 7-8 hours a day at the course over the summer and meeting some of my closest friends.
Q: How would you describe your bond with your teammates?
A: We're all very different people but we get along well and they are some of my closest friends.
Q: As an upperclassman, how do you lead this young UCI team?
A: Even though I'm an upperclassman, I've only been on this team for 10 months so I thought it would be difficult to be a leader. However, I've learned to lead by example and also help the freshmen with anything they need on or off the course.
Q: How do you think the fall season went and what are you looking forward to in the spring season?
A: I think our team faced a few minor setbacks this fall season, but we played in tough conditions and learned a lot. We all know what we need to work on to improve and I think we will come back really strong in the spring.
