UCI Set to Compete at the SDSU Fall Classic

The UC Irvine women's tennis team will head down to San Diego, competing at the SDSU Fall Classic Nov. 8 – 11. It is UCI's last tournament of the fall, as the 'Eaters hope to finish strong and create some momentum going into the dual match season.

Storylines
- UCI will send Stephanie Nguyen, Alyssia Fossorier, Jessica Tsukiji and Flora Amiri to compete in the Invitational
- Along with the Anteaters, Northern Colorado, Eastern Washington, Denver, Air Force, SDSU, Montana and Drake will be represented at the Invite
- In doubles, Nyguyen and Fossorier will pair up for the weekend along with Tsukiji and Amiri
- UC Irvine returns 11 letterwinners from a 2018-19 squad that went 14-12.
- The Anteaters' 14 victories were their most in a season since 2014-15 when they finished 15-9.
- As a team, UCI won 57% of its singles matches and 59% of its doubles matches last year.
- The Anteaters have 12 players from California, including four from Irvine.
- Elizabeth Ferris enters her fourth season as head coach with the team.
Last Time Out
- UCI played at the Jack Kramer Collegiate Invitational last weekend, gaining valuable experience through many quality matches.
- The Anteaters picked up three consolation singles wins at the tournament.
- Senior Stephanie Nguyen led the squad, topping her opponent Lindsey Galinas of UC Riverside in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
- Junior Flora Amiri cruised over Marymount's Miah Webb with an impressive 6-2, 6-1 scoreline.
- Newcomer Halla Alajeely showed great heart, closing out a tight match against UC Riverside's Sara Khattab 6-1, 7-5.
2018-19 Highlights
- As a true freshman, Jessica Tsukiji went 6-0 at the top two spots in the lineup and finished with a team-best 13 singles victories.
- Arianna Tilbury ranked second with a 12-9 singles record, playing primarily at Nos. 4-6.
- Stephanie Nguyen, who played at No. 1 and No. 2 all season, earned All-Big West honorable mention recognition.
- UC Irvine won the doubles point 14 times last year and went 13-1 in those matches.
- Alyssia Fossorier registered a team-leading 14-4 record in dual-match doubles.
- Tsukiji was also 11-9, including a 2-0 Big West record alongside Flora Amiri.
- Amiri/Tsukiji were selected as an All-Big West honorable mention doubles team.
- Gillian Parker went undefeated in both singles (7-0) and doubles (6-0).
Meet the Newcomers
- UCI welcomes two new players for the 2019-20 campaign.
- Freshman Jenna Schlatter is a four-star recruit from Saint Helena, Calif.
- Junior transfer Halla Alajeely played two years at Irvine Valley College where she was a JUCO All-American in both singles and doubles.
Academic Success
- UC Irvine was recognized as a 2018-19 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team.
- Five Anteaters were honored as ITA All-Academic Scholar-Athletes.
