
UC Irvine Takes Down UC Riverside, 3-1

IRVINE, Calif. – A team effort helped UC Irvine beat UC Riverside 3-1 (24-26, 25-19, 25-20, 25-21) at the Bren Events Center.
The Anteaters out-hit (.226-.172), blocked (10-3), dug (72-68) and aced (8-4) the Highlanders.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>UCI was led by freshman middle blocker Onye Ofoegbu with 13 kills and tied her career-high six block assists
>Freshman Joy Umeh had a career-best 11 kills to go with three blocks
>Sophomore Abby Marjama nearly missed a double-double with 10 kills and nine digs
>Libero Chloe Owens collected a career-high 23 digs
>Amarachi Osuji led UC Riverside with 18 kills and 12 digs
TURNING POINTS
FIRST SET
>UCI owned a 4-1 advantage on the strength of aces by Kelly Negron and Abby Marjama
>A kill and two UCI attack errors helped UCR to a 9-6 lead
>The Highlanders would continue to lead 19-15 before the Anteaters went on a 5-1 spurt to tie it at 20-20 on three consecutive UCR attack errors
>The Highlanders scored the next two only to watch a kill by Onye Ofoegbu and an ace from Abby Marjama to knot the score once again
>UCR used a pair of aces by Renata Bath to clinch the set 26-24
SECOND SET
>Consecutive kills by Loryn Carter and Ofoegbu gave UCI an early 6-2 lead
>A pair of kills by Joy Umeh moved the margin to 15-8
>A kill by Carter was followed by two UCR attack errors (22-14) then the Highlanders would out-score UCI 5-1 to close to 23-19
>The set would end on a Riverside service and attack error, giving UCI the 25-19 victory

>A kills by Kiani Stanton were on either side of a Marjama ace to put UCI up 14-8
>UCR would close within 14-12 before the Anteaters regained control 18-14 on a Marjama kill
>Another kill by Stanton gave UCI the 22-17 advantage
>A service error and two kills by Amarachi Osuji drew the Highlanders to 22-20
>UCI answered with a kill by Umeh and two blocks by Umeh and Ofoegbu to end the set, 25-20
FOURTH SET
>The teams remained close the entire set and were tied 21-21
>A UCR service error was followed by a kill by Carter, a block by Carter and Ofoegbu and a dig that fell for the final point, 25-21
>Ofoegbu had four kills on seven swings to close out the match

>Two more freshmen also recorded career-highs. Middle blocker Kiani Stanton had a personal-high eight kills and four block assists, while defensive specialist Sophia Skukan posted a career-high nine digs
>Setter Kelly Negron recorded 44 set assists, 15 digs and four block assists
>The Anteaters snapped an eight match losing streak and go to 5-20 overall and 2-11 in the Big West. UCR is 6-19 on teh year and 2-12 in league play
