IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team continues its fall season at the Bill Cullum Invitational in Simi Valley, Calif., Oct. 14-15. Thirty-six holes will be played on Monday, while the final round is set for Tuesday. Both days are slated for an 8 a.m. shotgun start at the par-72, 6,849-yard Wood Ranch Golf Club.
The Anteaters are part of a 13-team field that features Cal Poly, Grand Canyon, Sacramento State, San Diego, San Diego State, Southern Utah, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, Utah State, Weber State and host CSUN. UCI's 5-count-4 lineup is comprised of Ramiz Jamal, Jonathan Kang, Parker Lestz, Matt Gunson and Anthony Truong. Chris Casey will also compete as an individual.
STORYLINES
• This is the eighth consecutive year the 'Eaters will participate in the Bill Cullum Invitational.
• UC Irvine won the event back in 2000 and 2001.
• Last year at the Bill Cullum Invite, the Anteaters tied for 10th with a 54-hole score of 886 (306-295-285).
• Ramiz Jamal was UCI's top finisher, tying for 29th at 3-over 219 (73-73-73).
• UC Irvine has a veteran squad with eight letterwinners returning, including all five starters from 2018-19.
• Nearly half of the roster is comprised of seniors (4), all of whom were part of last year's Big West runner-up squad.
• Two of them, Ramiz Jamal and Jonathan Kang, also played a key role in the Anteaters' 2018 Big West title.
• Senior Anthony Truong is back with the team after traveling to Shanghai for the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship.
LAST TIME OUT
• UCI finished in 12th place with a three-round score of 865 (296-282-287) at the Nick Watney Invite, Sept. 30-Oct. 1.
• Ramiz Jamal paced the Anteaters with an even-par 213 (72-68-72) to tie for 27th overall.
• Matt Gunson tied for 35th at 2-over 215 (71-73-71).
• After a tough first round, Jonathan Kang settled in to finish 3-over (78-68-70).
• Kang had UC Irvine's best 36-hole stretch of the tournament, shooting 4-under over the final two rounds.
MEET THE TEAM
• Senior Ramiz Jamal earned second-team All-Big West honors in 2018-19.
• Jamal was tops on the team with a career-best 72.84 scoring average, a two-stroke improvement from 2017-18.
• He had 10 rounds at or below par with 75 birdies and two eagles, one of which was his first collegiate hole-in-one.
• Senior Anthony Truong (73.05) made an immediate impact as a 2018-19 junior transfer from Arizona State.
• Truong garnered All-Big West honorable mention recognition after placing fourth at the conference championships.
• Senior Jonathan Kang was third on the team last year with a 74.08 average through 24 rounds.
• Kang recorded his second-straight top-10 finish at the Big West Championships as he tied for eighth.
• Sophomore Matt Gunson led all freshmen at the 2019 Big West Championships where he tied for 10th.
• Gunson played in eight of UC Irvine's 10 tournaments last season, finishing with a 74.38 scoring average.
• Senior Chris Casey had a 75.00 average in his first season at UCI after transferring from Orange Coast College.
• Sophomore Nathan Irwin saw action in eight tournaments as a true freshman (75.86).
• Sophomores Parker Lestz and Ethan Han also return after making an appearance at the 2019 Anteater Invitational.
• Sophomore transfer Trueman Park is UC Irvine's lone newcomer. He played at Little Rock in 2017-18.
• Park was the 2015 Division I State Champion at Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz.
