Meaders Shines on Day Two of UW Invite

Freshman Zani Meaders cracked the program's all-time top-three in the 400m to lead the UC Irvine women's indoor track & field team Saturday at the UW Invitational.

Meaders placed eighth out of 36 overall competitors, and was the only freshman among the top-10. She crossed the finish line in 56.53 seconds, marking the Anteaters' best 400m time in two years. The Chino Hills, Calif., native is now No. 2 in indoor program history, coming in just one-hundredth of a second off the record that was established by Simone Buchanan in 2016 (56.52).
 
Sophomore Mikayla Scott was also 19th in the 400m (58.27).
 
Senior Hope Bushnell notched a season-best 7.68 to place 12th in the 60m prelims.
 
Senior Julia Sambvani, Meaders, Scott and senior Mychal Robinson combined for an eighth-place showing in the 4x400 relay. The quartet clocked in at 3:54.31.
 
In the field events, sophomore Natalie Koppel had a top-10 showing in the long jump, placing ninth out of 34 with a leap of 17-09.75.
 
Senior Elizabeth Akindele finished 15th in the shot put (42-08.75), and freshman Lorraine Nance was 18th in the triple jump (35-06.5).
 
UC Irvine will have a week off from competition before heading to Albuquerque, N.M., for the Don Kirby Invitational, Feb. 8-9.
