UC Irvine Falls 3-0 To No. 11 Illinois

Box Score CLEVELAND, Ohio – UC Irvine fell 3-0 to No. 11 Illinois in the final match of the CSU Invitational at Woodling Gynmasium.

The Illini, who improve to 8-0 overall, took the match by the scores of 25-14, 25-13, 25-23. UCI snapped a two-match winning streak and is 3-6 on the year.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Freshman Abby Marjama paced UCI with 10 kills
>The Anteaters were out-hit (.155-.364), out-blocked (9-4) and out-aced (10-1)
>Illinois' Megan Cooney did not have a hitting error, recording a match-high 15 kills on 21 swings (.714)

SET 1
>Illinois jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead and never looked back, winning the set 25-14

SET 2
>A 6-0 streak that included four UCI errors helped the Illini to a 14-7 lead
>Two more Anteater mistakes were part of another four in a row to extend the Illinois lead to 18-8
>The Illini would cruise to a 25-13 victory

SET 3
>UCI scored six in a row with the help of kills by Loryn Carter, Abby Marjama, Harlee Kekauoha, Idara Akpakpa and an ace by Carter, to get out to a 6-3 lead
>A kill and block by Makayla Wolfe was part of a 4-0 run to push the advantage to 14-8
>Illinois rallied with five kills in a row to force a UCI timeout, 14-13
>Out of the timeout, the Illini out-scored UCI 6-2 to take a 19-16 lead
>A kill by Marjama narrowed the deficit to 19-18, but Illinois responded with the next three points, the last two UCI attack errors, 22-19
>A pair of kills by Marjama gave UCI one last push, but the Illini responded with a block, 24-22
>Following a UCI kill, Beth Prince recorded the match-winner 25-23

>Loryn Carter and Ali Koumelis were named to the All-Tournament team
>Over the three tournament matches, Carter averaged a team-high 3.78 kills and 1.22 digs per set, while Koumelis averaged 11.56 set assists and 3.22 digs. Carter also had a team-best four aces
>Libero Haley DeSales continued her streak of digs in double figures with 11
