SEOUL, South Korea – Four Anteaters scored in double-digits as the offense ignited in UC Irvine's 102-58 victory over De La Salle University, from the Philippines, at the Asia Pacific University Challenge, Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, UCI improves to a perfect 3-0 in the tournament with two games remaining.
"The game went well overall," said graduate student 
Jonathan Galloway. "We've been adjusting to the international rules and adjusting to playing with each other in general and I feel like we are just getting a better feel for each other as the games progress. We all encourage each other and give our teammates confidence and I think that has helped some of the new guys step up and make big plays."
John Edgar Jr. led all players with a game-high 22 points shooting 62 percent (8-13) from the floor. Sophomore 
Collin Welp tallied 19 points while 
Brad Greene and freshman 
JC Butler had 18 and 13, respectively. Graduate transfer 
Robert Cartwright dished out a game-high 10 assists while Butler and 
Eyassu Worku each grabbed four steals.
Elston Jones led the defense with 11 rebounds and two blocks.
As a team, UCI shot 51 percent from the floor, holding De La Salle to just 29 percent overall. The 'Eaters held advantages in rebounds (52-30), assists (18-13) and steals (15-6).
The Anteaters got off to a fast start leading, 24-18, after the first quarter thanks to 10 points from Edgar Jr.
UCI exploded in the second quarter, out-scoring De La Salle, 31-5, to take a 55-23 lead into the half. Butler tallied nine points in the second frame while Edgar Jr. had six.
The 'Eaters continued to dominate in the second half securing the 44-point, 102-58, win.
"We came out with great defense," said 
JC Butler. We are improving a lot every game on defense, our intensity and team chemistry." "I am getting more comfortable playing with my teammates and just getting to know everyone better throughout each game and off the court as well."
UCI will take a short break before returning to the court to play Chinese Taipei Saturday, Aug. 11 at 3:00 p.m. local time (Friday at 11:00 p.m. PT).
