Anteaters Defeat Chinese Taipei, 81-72

SEOUL, South Korea – The UC Irvine men's basketball team hung on to beat a university-selected team from Chinese Taipei, 81-72, in the fourth game of the 2018 Asia Pacific University Challenge, Saturday at the Jamsil Students' Gymnasium.
 
UCI remains perfect in the tournament with a 4-0 record.
 
Jonathan Galloway and Eyassu Worku both had double-doubles, scoring 18 points each while Galloway had a game-high 14 rebounds and Worku grabbed 11. Tommy Rutherford and Elston Jones also scored in double-digits with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Worku also dished out six assists and finished with five steals.
 
"We came out really strong from the start," said Eyassu Worku. "I think in the middle of the game we let up a little bit and Chinese Taipei was able to come back and make it close. At the end of the day, we came together as a team and got the win. It was our fourth-straight road game, but we were still able to come out and get a win."
 
The Anteaters jumped out to a quick start and led 14-2 with 5:40 left in the first quarter before Chinese Taipei clawed back to make it 21-15 after the first quarter.
 
The game remained close as UCI held on to a one-point, 37-36 advantage at the half. Rutherford finished with seven points in the second quarter.
 
The 'Eaters pulled ahead in the third quarter leading, 62-54, before Chinese Taipei came within six points, 68-62, with 5:31 left in the fourth quarter. Galloway had seven points in the fourth quarter as UCI secured the 81-72 victory.
 
UCI will play its final game of the tournament against Russia Sunday, August 12 at 11:00 p.m. local time (1:30 A.m. PT).
