IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer is back for the 2018 season with a high-octane schedule coming into Anteater Stadium.
The season starts off in Anteater Stadium with four explosive matchups right out of the gate. The 2016 National Champion USC squad comes to UC Irvine on August 16 for a Thursday primetime matchup to kick things off. The 'Eaters and Trojans have some unfinished business after a finishing in a draw to start the 2017 season off in an exhibition contest.
"Once again we have built a non-conference schedule to test us in every way," head coach
Scott Juniper notes. "We will play four Pac-12 teams, four WCC teams plus Fresno State. Everyone is laser-focused on the opening game against USC which should be a great event for our fans."
UCI follows that up with two more Pac-12 visitors in Arizona and Utah. The 'Eaters and Wildcats battled to a draw last season, one of the few non-conference opponents to go into Tucson and leave with a result. UC Irvine battled at Utah last year with the Utes taking it, 1-0, and the 'Eaters trying to earn its first win against them in the squads' second-ever matchup. The 'Eaters complete the August homestand with rematch against WCC foe LMU after the pair drew up in Los Angeles a year ago.
UC Irvine's first road trip is into treacherous Oregon for the Nike Portland Invitational. The 'Eaters' first foe once again is the Washington Huskies marking the second straight season UCI matches up with four Pac-12 opponents and first time with four in the regular season ledger. Over head coach
Scott Juniper's 11-year tenure, the Anteaters have won eight times and drawn thrice in 29 career meetings with the Pac-12.
The perennial WCC power Portland completes the weekend in Oregon, and begins a stretch of four of five games against WCC schools as UC Irvine treks through Mountain West opponent Fresno State, Pepperdine, and San Francisco before ending non-conference play back in Anteater Stadium against San Diego.
The season then gives way to Big West play with the 'Eaters beginning their regular season title defense at home with three straight against Hawai'i, UC Santa Barbara, and Cal Poly. The Anteaters then set out for four road games in their final five matches starting at UC Riverside October 11 and UC Davis October 14. The final regular season home matchup lands on October 18 against the CSUNÂ Matadors before shoving off to local rivals Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton to finish the regular season.
The Anteaters are of course the Big West Tournament hosts for 2018 with the tournament this year kicking off on November 1 with the semifinals in Irvine leading to the Big West Championship match Sunday, November 4.
'Eaters begin 2018 action on August 11 with an exhibition match at the OC Great Park's Championship Stadium to face Big West rival Long Beach State.
