SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- UC Irvine took Sunday's rubber match in Baggett Stadium, 4-1, behind timely offense and a strong day on the mound to down Cal Poly.
Starter
Taylor Rashi got things going with a solid effort through 3.2 innings allowing just one run on a bases loaded infield single. He was lifted after hitting a batter in the fourth, and
Jordan Bocko relieved him getting the dangerous Alex McKenna to fly out stranding two runners.
Bocko took over pitching into the eighth and facing one over the minimum shutting down the Cal Poly (23-27, 9-9) attack with three strikeouts and four shutout frames.
Dylan Riddle got his man to end the eighth as Elijah Skipps flew out to right field missing his second home run of the series by feet.
Sean Sparling took the mound in the ninth getting all three hitters he faced for his second save of the season to lock down the 4-1 win, and give the 'Eaters (29-20, 10-8) their fourth series win in conference.
Bocko grabbed the win, his fourth of the year, finishing the weekend off with six scoreless innings in total allowing just two hits and not issuing a walk. Riddle got both batters he faced on the weekend earning a pair of holds.
Cal Poly's staff was almost up to the task using only two pitchers on the afternoon. Starter Michael Clark went 4.1 innings before leaving, and allowed three runs, two of which were unearned while still drawing the loss, his sixth. Austin Dondanville did his best Taylor Dollard impression tossing 4.2 innings allowing just a single unearned run in relief.
The offense was a team effort for the Anteaters led by two-hit days from
Mikey Filia,
Konnor Zickefoose,
Ryan Fitzpatrick, and
Parker Coss.
Matt Reitano started the scoring with an RBI groundout in the second. After the Mustangs tied it with a third-inning infield single, Fitzpatrick and
Nick Anderson swatted consecutive singles with bases loaded to put the 'Eaters on top, 3-1, in the fifth.
Christian Koss singled home
Devin Pettengill in the sixth for good measure after Pettengill pinch-ran and reached third on a two-base throwing error by catcher Nick Meyer. Pettengill pinch-ran for
Brendan Brooks making his first appearance in seven games following his injury, as he finished with a single in three at-bats.
The Cal Poly offense was held in check outside of Kyle Marinconz with three hits. No other Mustang reached base twice on the afternoon.
UCI improves to 10-8 in conference, percentage points back of second place CSUN, and gaining a game on Big West leader Cal State Fullerton now four games back. The 'Eaters go on the road for their final midweek matchup next, a Tuesday night meeting at USC starting at 6:00 p.m., before the final home series for the Anteaters over the weekend hosting UC Riverside.
