IRVINE, Calif. – Stephanie Hazell highlighted the day for the UCI women's tennis team with a win at No. 1 singles as UCI dropped a 5-2 decision to CSUN in Big West action Sunday.
The Anteaters are still looking for a conference win and now sit at 0-5 in the Big West and 8-13 on the season. The Matadors are 7-8 overll and 3-2 in conference.
CSUN took a 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles point with wins on all three courts. Hazell and
Stephanie Nguyen suffered a 6-0 defeat at the top spot while
Arianna Tilbury and
Flora Amiri fell at No. 2, 6-4.
Hazell battled with Monik Van de Vondel at No. 1 singles, ultimately winning in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
Yulin Chen won on court four after the Matadors' Kiryang Kim retired in the third set giving Chen a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 victory.
Amiri went the distance with Skyla Alcon at No. 3 singles but suffered a three-set, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 defeat.
Nguyen retired at No. 2 and Tilbury and
Jacqueline Tsodikova fell at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively,
UCI continues conference play with a match against UC Santa Barbara Saturday, April 14 at 11:00 a.m.
