LONG BEACH, Calif. --- Taylor Rashi went the distance in just his second start as an Anteater, but was outmatched by LBSU's Clayton Andrews to pitched well enough to grab the 1-0 victory Saturday afternoon at Blair Field.
The junior transfer sparkled on the mound for the Anteaters (16-13, 2-3) allowing just three hits in 101 pitches. He issued just one walk to the leadoff hitter in the first inning, and at one point retired 12 straight Dirtbags finishing the day with five strikeouts. The only trouble came in the second inning when consecutive hits in a double by Santino Rivera and single off the glove of
Cole Kreuter by Jarren Duran brought home the on run for Long Beach State (12-19, 1-1) on the afternoon.
Unfortunately for the 'Eaters, the one run was all the Dirtbags needed as starter Clayton Andrews spun his own masterpiece pitching into the ninth shutting the Anteaters down. UCI mustered five hits including a pair of doubles, but could never string anything together stranding all five hits including four in scoring position while Andrews fooled the 'Eaters behind 11 strikeouts and 114 pitches.
UC Irvine's five hits were distributed between five different hitters.
Matt Reitano and
Cole Kreuter earned the doubles, both with one out in their respective innings.
Ryan Fitzpatrick saw his streak of games reaching base snapped ending at 36 consecutive.
Rashi drew the loss, now at 3-2, but registered a complete game, the second of the season for the Anteaters. He also hit career hits in innings en route to his three-hitter. His offense was shutout for the first time this season, and the first since last year's series with LBSU.
The series is now tied at a win apiece with the finale coming Sunday, Apr. 8 at 1:00 p.m.
