CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team got off to a strong start at the Big West Championships as it sits in second place after the first round of action Sunday at Industry Hills Golf Club's par-72, 6,989-yard "Ike" Eisenhower Course.

As a team, the 'Eaters fired off 24 birdies to finish at a season-low 4-under 284. It was their best round at the conference tournament since 2007. UCI tied for second with UC Santa Barbara and is two strokes back of Cal State Fullerton (282). Long Beach State (289) and UC Riverside (290) round out the top-five.

Three Anteaters are among the top-10 in the individual standings, led by sophomore
Jonathan Kang, who tied for third. Kang matched his career-best round at 69 (-3). He opened the tournament with back-to-back birdies and stayed under-par the rest of the day. Kang ended up tying for the team lead with six total birdies.

Senior
Ryan O'Connor and junior
Ramiz Jamal both carded a 1-under 71 to tie for seventh. O'Connor shot up the leaderboard on the back nine where he had four birdies, including three-straight on Holes 12-14. He notched his sixth birdie of the afternoon on the 16th hole to get to 2-under, before wrapping up the round with a bogey and par.

Jamal played a very consistent round of golf and closed out the day strong with three birdies over the final five holes.

Senior
David Kim kept himself within striking distance as he recorded a 1-over 73 to tie for 19th. Senior
Jonathan Young is also 30th with a first-round 76 (+4).

UC Santa Barbara's Brandon Bauman notched a 5-under 67 to lead the individual field. Fellow Gaucho Nick Swanson is in second (68), while Kang and Cal State Fullerton's Martin Manalo are two strokes back.

UC Irvine returns to Industry Hills Golf Club on Monday for the second round of the Big West Championships. The 'Eaters are slated to tee off at 8 a.m.
