STOCKTON, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback to Pacific in a midweek match Wednesday at Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.
UCI falls to 8-9 on the season while the Tigers improve to 5-6 overall.
"We had several chances to win the doubles point but could not convert," said head coach
Elizabeth Ferris. "I think losing such a close doubles point was somewhat deflating. In spite of the loss I like our new doubles pairings and we will look to build off of this. In singles we would like to see better strategy and execution tomorrow."
The pair of
Yulin Chen and
Stephanie Nguyen won at No. 3, 7-6 (7-4), against Pacific's Anna Ramos-Vinolas and Karina Vyrlan but UCI dropped at the No. 1 and 2 spots to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Stephanie Hazell and
Danielle Garrido teamed up at No. 1 and battled before dropping a 7-6 (10-8) decision.
Hazell played at the top spot in singles as well and dropped a close match to Pacific's Maayan Sela by a score of 6-3, 6-1.
Flora Amiri suffered a 7-5, 7-5 defeat on court three to Ramos-Vinolas while
Arianna Tilbury dropped at No. 5, 4-6, 3-6.
The match was clinched at No. 6 when Sabrina Rodriguez defeated UCI's
Jacqueline Tsodikova, 6-4, 6-2.
The Anteaters will look to rebound tomorrow with a match against Big West opponent UC Davis (11-3, 4-1) at 11 a.m. at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
