Box Score IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback to Brigham Young University in a midday match Thursday at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

"We battled so hard today!" said head coach Elizabeth Ferris. "We dug deep, mixed up our shots and were coachable. Unfortunately we couldn't't convert on a few of those tie breaks. Number one doubles did an excellent job of stepping up and closing it out".

UCI (1-4) dropped two of the three doubles contests as the Cougars (2-0) went into singles play with a 1-0 lead. Stephanie Hazell and Danielle Garrido picked up the Anteaters' win at No. 1 with a 6-3 triumph over Mayci Jones and Kate Cusick.

Three of the six singles matches went into three sets. Arianna Tilbury lost a tough 6-4, 5-7, 13-11 decision at the No. 5 position. Stephanie Nguyen then came up short at No. 1 (5-7, 6-2, 10-5) and Flora Amiri dropped to Cusick on court four, 2-6, 7-6 (5-0), 10-7.

The match was clinched at the No. 3 spot as Danielle Garrido dropped at 6-1, 6-1 decision to Madeline Almeida.

"We still need to get the basics down pat," added Ferris. "Tomorrow is another opportunity".

The 'Eaters return to the court tomorrow to face Idaho State at Anteater Tennis Stadium. The match is set to start at 1:30 p.m.
