'Eaters Pounce on Faulty Aztec First Inning for 9-4 Win

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine took advantage of six free passes in the first inning jumping out to a huge lead and riding that to a 9-4 win over San Diego State Tuesday night in a chilly Anteater Ballpark.

SDSU (6-3) starter Ray Lambert walked the first three batters he faced and hit Nick Anderson with the bases loaded before he was lifted after just 18 pitches in a 1-1 tie. UC Irvine (6-2) made it count as the next three hitters drove home runs from a Jacob Castro sacrifice fly to a 2-run Ryan Fitzpatrick double, and finished off by an RBI triple from Adrian Damla for five Anteater runs after staking the Aztecs to a run in the top half.

Konnor Zickefoose produced his own damage the next inning with a high shot over the right field wall, the first home run Anteater Ballpark has let up this season, making it a 6-1 Anteater lead.
The Aztecs would mount a threat in the eighth after a pair of errors set the table for Matt Rudick to single them home and close the deficit to 7-4, but SDSU's own errors in the bottom of the inning set up a 2-run single for Nick Anderson ultimately putting the game away.

Lambert incurred the loss allowing the only four hitters he faced to score rocketing his season ERA to 135.00. Alonzo Garcia continued his consistent efforts allowing two earned runs over four innings for the win behind five strikeouts. Sean Sparling and Taylor Rashi were each effective in two innings on the night with neither allowing an earned run. Jake Lachemann closed the door with a scoreless ninth. SDSU's most effective pitcher was local product Noah Fluman who allowed two baserunners in three scoreless innings.

UCI returns to the win column now at 6-2 on the year as it rides off to Fort Worth, Texas to face No. 7 TCU over the weekend March 2-4.

NOTES: Konnor Zickefoose now leads the team with two home runs this season...Zickefoose scored three runs, the most by any Anteater this season...Damla's triple was the first of his career, both triples by the 'Eaters this season have been by left-handers (Castro)...Garcia's win is his first since 2016...UCI's nine runs are its most in a game this season, it has now scored nearly 1/3 of its runs (11 of 36) in the first inning...UCI added two more sacrifice flies upping its conference-leading total on the season to eight
