IRVINE, Calif. - Former UC Irvine men's golfer Vinnie Poncino will be competing in the Genesis Open PGA Tour Event at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Feb. 15-18.
The 2018 Genesis Open has an outstanding field that features four of the top-10 players in the current world rankings, including defending champion Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy. Other notable names in the tournament are Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott and Bubba Watson. Overall, the players competing this week have combined for 52 major titles and 373 PGA Tour victories.
Poncino's pairing, which includes Jonathan Randolph and Tyler Duncan, starts play in Thursday's first round at 1:15 p.m. from the 10th tee. The group is then back in action on Friday, kicking off the second round at 8:35 a.m. from the first tee.
Poncino earned a spot in the 2018 Genesis Open by winning the club professional qualifying tournament at Hacienda Country Club last week. He shot a 68 to beat out other area club pros for the coveted berth into the PGA Tour event.
Poncino is currently head professional at San Clemente Golf Course. The UC Irvine alum competed on the Anteater men's golf team from 2002-04, helping the squad make back-to-back NCAA West Regional appearances and claim a Big West championship in 2003.
Poncino was a two-time all-conference selection and garnered first-team recognition as a senior. The Mission Viejo native was also the individual Big West runner-up in 2004. He concluded his collegiate career with 10 top-10 finishes and a 72.75 stroke average.
