December 03, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
IRVINE, Calif. – Head coach Ashlie Hain announced the signing of Onye Ofoegbu and Carrissa MacDonald to National Letters of Intent.
Onye Ofoegbu
6-3/Middle Blocker/Cerritos, Calif./Long Beach Poly HS
Ofoegbu was a member of Long Beach Poly's 2018 Moore League Championship team that reached the quarterfinals of the CIF Division I championship. She was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Phenom Watch list as well as Prepvolleyball.com's Senior Ace list and Class of 2019 Top 50 Junior recruits. The middle blocker has been SoCal Prep Legends Student-Athlete of the Week three times in her career. Ofoegbu, who plays for Mizuno Long Beach Volleyball Club, earned 2017 Dave Mohs Memorial Volleyball Division I All-Tournament team distinction.
Coach Hain said: "Onye is one of the highest ranked recruits UC Irvine volleyball has ever gotten a commitment from. She has the potential to be a dominate middle at this level not only in the Big West conference, but on a national scale. She values prestige of UC Irvine academics and once she came to campus we both knew it was a great fit."
Carrissa MacDonald
6-2/Outside Hitter/San Jose, Calif./Pioneer HS
MacDonald was a two-time first-team All-Blossom Valley Santa Teresa League selection and was named the league's Most Valuable Player after guiding Pioneer High School to a league championship this year. She led all outside hitters in the Central Coast Section with a .470 hitting percent as a senior. The outside hitter won the 16s Division at the Junior Nationals with Vision Volleyball Club.
Coach Hain said: "Carrissa is a late bloomer that came on strong at the end of her junior club season. She will add physicality to our pins as well as a being a solid serve-receive passer. Carrissa was excited about all UC Irvine had to offer and her enthusiasm to play for UC Irvine volleyball is what we value in recruits."
