UCI Falls to Pacific in Overtime, 84-75

STOCKTON, Calif. – The UC Irvine men's basketball team suffered an 84-75 defeat to Pacific in overtime, Saturday night at Alex G. Spanos Center.

UCI falls to 11-4 on the season. UOP improves to 10-5 overall.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
> Max Hazzard finished with a game-high 28 points on 10-21 shooting including five three-pointers
> Evan Leonard also finished in double-digits with 13 points
> Elston Jones tied a season-best 12 rebounds while Robert Cartwright dished out three assists
> UCI shot 44.4 percent (24-54) from the field and 38.1% (8-21) from behind the arc. The Tigers were 41.8% (23-55) overall and 5-14 (.357) from three-point range
> The Anteaters were out-rebounded 37-35 and committed 19 turnovers to the Tigers 14
> UCI got into foul trouble tallying 33 on the night while there was a total of 53 fouls committed between the two teams. UOP scored 33 points from free throws compared to the 'Eaters 19
> The game saw 12 ties and 15 lead changes
> Ajare Sanni led UOP with 23 points

First Half
> Pacific jumped out to a 9-7 lead (16:09) but a Hazzard three-pointer initiated a 7-0 run to give UCI a five-point, 14-9, advantage with 12:56 remaining
> The Tigers closed the gap to knot the game, 16-16, with 10:30 to play
> The game tied four more times to make it 25-25 with 5:05 remaining
> Pacific went on a 9-1 run down the stretch to take a 34-26 lead. John Edgar Jr. made a layup in the final 30 seconds as the Tigers went into the locker rooms with a six-point 34-28 lead
> Hazzard finished with a team-best 10 points on 4-7 shooting

Second Half
> The Tigers went up by seven, 40-33, early in the frame (14:33)
> Back-to-back three's from Leonard knotted the game, 43-43, at 11:28
> The teams exchanged back-and-forth points tying the game four more times to make it 54-54 with 5:42 to play
> UCI took a four-point, 61-57, lead after a 7-0 run with 3:25 remaining
> The Tigers used a 6-1 run down the stretch to ultimately send the game to overtime
> A Hazzard shot with .8 left on clock was off the mark and the game headed to overtime tied, 63-63

OVERTIME
> The Tigers scored 10-straight points to open up the frame and ultimately seal the win
> Max Hazzard hit a jumper, drew a foul and made the free throw to bring UCI within seven, 73-66 (1:48)
> Pacific scored four-straight points to take a double-digit lead 77-66 with 1:41 to play
> Eyassu Worku made a jumper in the final minute to make it 84-75 at the final buzzer

NOTES
> UCI finished 2018 with a 25-9 record and only lost four games on the road
> It was UCI's first overtime of the season
> The Anteaters have not won an overtime game since Mar. 16 2016 against North Dakota
> It marked the first time since 2013 that the Anteaters lost to the Tigers and snapped a three-game winning streak against Pacific
