The Anteaters close out their 2018 home schedule, hosting UC Santa Barbara Thursday (Nov. 8) at 7:00 p.m. and No. 16 Cal Poly Saturday (Nov. 10) at 5:00 p.m. Both matches are held at the Bren Events Center.
Five UCI seniors (Kylie Green, Harlee Kekauoha, Ali Koumelis, Haley DeSales and Idara Akpakpa) will be honored following Saturday's match.
Both matches will be aired on ESPN3.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
UCI and UCSB opened the Big West schedule back on Sept. 18 with the Anteaters winning 3-1 (25-19, 29-27, 11-25, 26-24).
In the first meeting, UCSB led UCI in kills (60-49), aces (8-5), digs (76-65) and hitting percentage (.234-.227), but the Anteaters held an 8.5-5 advantage in blocks.
Abby Marjama and Idara Akpakpa had a team-high 12 kills with Akpakpa recording a match-best six block assists. Haley DeSales had a then-career-high 25 digs as the libero.
Lindsey Ruddins had a match-high 23 kills to go with 18 digs for the Gauchos.
UCSB is 14-10 overall and 6-6 in the Big West.
The Gauchos suffered a 3-0 defeat to Cal Poly last week.
The Anteaters and Mustangs will be meeting for the second time in 10 days.
The last time the two teams met in San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly swept the Anteaters, 3-0 (25-19, 25-23-25-13)
Loryn Carter led UCI with 10 kills, hitting .455 (10-0-22). Torrey Van Winden posted a match-best 21 kills for Cal Poly.
The Mustangs are 21-2 overall and 9-1 in conference play. Their loss in Hawaii snapped a program-record 25 consecutive Big West wins dating back to 2016. Pittsburgh was the only other team to take down Cal Poly in the second match of the year.
UCI has lost seven straight outings against the Mustangs.
ABOUT THE ANTEATERS
UCI is 15-10 overall and 9-4 in the Big West, sitting in third place.
Last week, the Anteaters dropped matches to Cal Poly (3-0) and UC Riverside (3-2) before beating Cal State Fullerton (3-0).
UCI is 0-5 in five-set matches this season.
WOLFE SHINES
Middle blocker Makayla Wolfe fired a career-high eight aces against Cal State Fullerton last Saturday. Her eight aces are second most in the UCI record books and are tied for third nationally this season.
She is second on the team with 22 aces, 17 coming against Big West opponents which ranks third in the conference.
The junior ranks third in the Big West in hitting percentage at .357. She averages 2.01 kills and 0.89 blocks.
MARJAMA MAGIC
Outside hitter Abby Marjama has been named Big West Freshman Player of the Week four times this season.
She is second on the team in kills, averaging 2.63 per set overall, which is 10th in the conference, but leads the team against Big West opponents with a 3.10 which ranks seventh.
Marjama has led the team in kills on 10 occasions and recorded 13 double-figure kill performances.
The freshman leads the Big West in aces with a 0.43 average. She recorded nine aces against Saint Mary's on Aug. 25, which tied a UCI school record for most in a match and is tied for second most in the country this year.
LORYN LEADS
Loryn Carter leads UCI with a 2.95 kill average. The outside hitter has recorded double-figure kills 17 times this season, including the last five matches.
ALL ABOUT AKPAKPA
Middle blocker Idara Akpakpa ranks fourth in the Big West with a 1.04 blocking average, but leads the league in conference matches with a 1.18 average. She also ranks fourth in conference-only hitting percentage .349 and seventh overall (.310). The senior had a career-high nine total blocks three times this season against Long Beach State (10/5/18), Hawaii (9/23/18) and Pepperdine (9/12/18).
SENIOR IMPACT
Heading in to Saturday's home finale, UCI seniors have cemented their place in the UCI record books.
Opposite Harlee Kekauoha is one of five Anteater players to be named first team All-Big West three times in a career. She currently ranks 10th in career kills (1,154) and attempts (2,991) and third in aces (138). She owns the school record for best hitting percentage in a match with a .923 mark (12-0-13) against Cal State Fullerton in 2016.
Ali Koumelis is currently seventh in set assists (2,220) all-time, while Idara Akpakpa ranks 10th in career block assists (263) and total blocks (309).
In just two-plus seasons at UCI, Haley DeSales ranks 14th in career digs with 989.
All four Anteaters have garnered All-Big West honors as well as Big West Player of the Week accolades in their careers.
