UC Irvine Closes Season With Loss To UNLV In NIVC

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – UC Irvine ended the season with a 3-0 loss to UNLV (25-19, 25-23, 25-19) in the first round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship held at Cox Pavilion.
The Anteaters end the season 16-13 overall, while UNLV goes to 20-11 and advances to play Fresno State in the second round.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Freshman outside hitter Abby Marjama led UCI with 12 kills and 12 digs, her seventh double-double of the year. The Big West Freshman of the Year also fired four aces
>Sophomore outside hitter Loryn Carter followed with eight kills
>Senior Haley DeSales, who played both on the outside and at libero tonight, recorded 11 digs
>The Anteaters had 38 kills to UNLV's 36, but hit .152 (38-21-112), the fifth lowest offensive efficiency of the year
>UNLV was led by Mariena Hayden's 14 kills and four aces
>UNLV owned the net, out-blocking UCI 14-4
TURNING POINTS

>UNLV made a move with a kill and two consecutive blocks to go up 17-14
>Back-to-back kills by Ali Koumelis and Makayla Wolfe closed the gap to 19-17

>Two Abby Marjama aces was followed by a Haley DeSales kill to give the Anteaters an early 5-2 lead

>Four straight by UNLV, three on UCI errors gave the Lady Rebels the 7-4 advantage
>UCI would narrow the margin to 8-7 on an Idara Akpakpa kill, but UNLV would go on a 7-1 run to extend the lead to 15-9
>Trailing 19-13, UCI came alive scoring four in a row on kills by Koumelis and Marjama and two Rebel errors, one a block by Akpakpa and Carter to inch to 19-17
>The Lady Rebels closed out strong again with five of the final six, 25-19

>DeSales recorded double-figure digs in all but one match this season
