Anteaters Fall to the Waves in GCC Third-Place Game

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The fourth-seeded UC Irvine men's water polo team dropped a 10-8 decision to second-seeded Pepperdine in the Golden Coast Conference (GCC) Tournament third-place game, Sunday at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.

UCI ends the season with a 9-16 record while Pepperdine finished 15-11 overall.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
> Jason Evezard led the 'Eaters with four goals
> Jack Trush recorded two goals while Jared Gornay and Jon Polos each had one
> Byron Rivers made eight saves and four steals in goal
> UCI out-shot the Waves 29-28
> The 'Eaters drew 18 exclusions but only converted 5-18
> Balazs Kosa led Pepperdine with four goals
> John Claude Marco finished with 17 saves for the Waves

TURNING POINTS
> Trush got the 'Eaters on the board first before the teams exchanged back-and-forth goals to knot the game, 2-2, after the first quarter
> Gornay scored on a power-play to give UCI a 3-2 lead (5:43) in the second quarter
> The Waves recorded three-straight goals to take a 6-3 lead into halftime
> Trush scored first in the third quarter before Pepperdine's Kosa converted on a 5-meter penalty to make it, 7-4, with 3:32 to play in the frame
> Evezard tallied a powerplay goal in the final 30 seconds to bring UCI within three, 8-5, after the third quarter
> Evezard added back-to-back goals in the fourth quarter to make it, 8-7, with 6:41 to play
> The Waves' Dakis scored and Evezard answered recording his fourth goal of the day but Pepperdine's Kosa had a powerplay goal giving the Waves an 10-8 lead with two minutes to play
> UCI was unable to score in the final two minutes ultimately suffering the 10-8 loss

> Evezard finished the year with a team-best 64 goals
