SCOUTING THE RAINBOW WAHINE
UCI led 2-0 before Hawaii came back to win the final three sets the last time the teams tangled in Irvine on Sept. 23.
Abby Marjama had a career-high 15 kills, while Idara Akpakpa tied her career-high with eight block assists and nine total blocks. McKenna Granato pounded a match-high 24 kills for Hawaii.
UCI recorded a season-high 15 blocks.
Hawaii is 16-8 overall and 12-2 in the Big West.
The Rainbow Wahine suffered a 3-2 loss to Pepperdine in a non-conference match last week.
UCI will be looking for its first-ever win against Hawaii, losing the previous 39 meetings.
ABOUT THE ANTEATERS
UCI is 16-11 overall and 10-5 in the Big West.
UCI is 5-4 on the road this season and 0-5 in five-set matches.
The Anteaters have 10 Big West wins which ties last year's total. The 10 victories is the most since 2009 when the club had 11.
UCI will end the conference slate in third place as they can't catch Hawaii (12-2) and UC Davis (8-7) can't catch the Anteaters.
Last week, the Anteaters split a pair of matches, topping UC Santa Barbara, 3-1 then dropping a 3-0 loss to No. 16 Cal Poly.
Middle blocker Idara Akpakpa led UCI in the win over the Gauchos with 13 kills, hitting .500 and shared the team lead with Makayla Wolfe with nine kills versus the Mustangs.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
UCI is third in the Big West in opponent hitting percentage (.187) and blocks (2.10)
The Anteaters have out-blocked opponents 12 times, including a season-high 15 against Hawaii the first time the teams played.
FROM THE SERVICE LINE
Outside hitter Abby Marjama tied the school record for aces with nine against Saint Mary's on Aug. 25 then middle blocker Makayla Wolfe fired a career-high eight aces against Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 3 which is second most in the UCI record books.
Marjama's nine aces is second most in the nation this season. She leads the Big West with 44 aces overall and a 0.44 average.
As a team, the Anteaters are second in the Big West with a 1.40 ace average.
MORE MAKAYLA
Wolfe ranks fourth in the Big West in hitting percentage at .345. She averages 2.04 kills and 0.91 blocks overall.
She is second on the team with 22 aces, 17 coming against Big West opponents which ranks sixth in the conference.
MARJAMA MAGIC
Outside hitter Abby Marjama is second on the team in kills, averaging 2.65 per set overall, which is 10th in the conference, but leads the team against Big West opponents with a 3.07 which ranks seventh.
The Freshman of the Year candidate has been named Big West Freshman Player of the Week four times this season.
Marjama has led the team in kills on 10 occasions and recorded 13 double-figure kill performances.
LORYN LEADS
Loryn Carter leads UCI with a 2.89 kill average, good for ninth best amongst Big West players.
The outside hitter has recorded double-figure kills 17 times this season, including five of the last seven matches.
ALL ABOUT AKPAKPA
Middle blocker Idara Akpakpa ranks fifth in the Big West with a 1.05 blocking average, but leads the league in conference matches with a 1.18 mark. She also ranks second in conference-only hitting percentage .365 and is fourth overall (.323).
The senior had a career-high nine total blocks three times this season against Long Beach State (10/5/18), Hawaii (9/23/18) and Pepperdine (9/12/18).
SCOOPING THEM UP
Senior Haley DeSales ranks second in the Big West in digs with a 4.67 average. She has totaled digs in double-digits in all but one match this season, recording 20 or more digs nine times. DeSales, who started the first 20 matches as a libero has moved to the pin with absence of Kekauoha and had a season-high 10 kills in the win over the Gauchos.
Erin Alonso has now stepped in to the libero role, averaging 2.29 digs per set, totaling a career-high 24 last week against UCSB. Alonso has recorded digs in double-figures in all, but one match since switching to the different colored jersey full time.
