UC Irvine Suffers 3-0 Loss To No. 16 Cal Poly

IRVINE, Calif. – UC Irvine closed out its regular season home schedule with a 3-0 loss to No. 16 Cal Poly (25-23, 25-23, 25-23) at the Bren Events Center.
The Anteaters go to 16-11 overall and 10-5 in the Big West, while Cal Poly improves to 23-2 on the year and 13-1 in Big West action.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>The Anteaters offense was balanced with middle blockers Idara Akpakpa and Makayla Wolfe leading the way with nine kills each. Wolfe had a match-high five total blocks
>Outside hitters Haley DeSales, Abby Marjama and Loryn Carter each had eight kills
>Setter Ali Koumelis recorded her 11th double-double with 30 set assists and 11 digs
>Torrey Van Winden led Cal Poly with a match-high 22 kills, while Katherine Brouker had a match-best 19 digs
HEAD COACH ASHLIE HAIN SAID
"We were right there in every set and they just executed a few points better than we did. While it was a loss, I think it was a solid performance to send the seniors off on."

SET ONE
>Cal Poly's Madilyn Mercer and Aldee Van Winden had back-to-back kills to give the Mustangs a slight separation, 7-4
>UCI would close to 11-10 on an Idara Akpakpa kill, but Cal Poly would go on a 6-1 run, five of them kills to extend the lead to 17-11
>An overpass that was crushed by Akpakpa got UCI within 19-16
>A block by Makayla Wolfe and Haley DeSales was followed by an ace by Kylie Green, 23-20
>The Mustangs would hold set point 24-20 when the Anteaters rallied with a kill by Sophie Wood and two by Abby Marjama, but an Anteater attack error would give Cal Poly the victory, 25-23

>UCI controlled the set early 6-3 on a Wolfe and Carter block
>Cal Poly would score four straight to take a 9-8 lead
>Consecutive aces by Marjama put the Anteaters on top 14-11
>UCI would build a 17-13 lead on a Wolfe solo block
>Another Green ace widen the gap to 19-14
>Following a Cal Poly timeout, the Mustangs rattled off four in a row to close within 20-18
>Torrey Van Winden would put away an overpass then Aldee Van Winden would record a solo block on the next play to put the Mustangs up 23-22
>Cal Poly would win the set 25-23

>Cal Poly took control early in the third set 4-0
>Two more kills by the Mustangs gave Cal Poly a 9-3 advantage
>Akpakpa took over with a pair of kills and a block with Carter to get UCI back in the set, 13-10
>UCI rallied on kills by DeSales and Wolfe and a block by Wolfe and Ali Koumelis plus a Mustang attack error to trail, 19-17
>At 24-20, the match appeared to end but a UCI challenge was overturned giving Akpakpa a kill and keeping the Anteaters alive, 24-21
>UCI took advantage, using a bad set and a block by Carter and Akpakpa, 24-23
>The Mustangs would win the match on a Torrey Van Winden kill, 25-23
