Another Big West Point as Anteaters, Aggies Play to 0-0 Draw

DAVIS, Calif. --- UC Irvine continued to add to its Big West point total Sunday afternoon at Aggie Soccer Field drawing with UC Davis, 0-0.

The Aggies (5-7-3, 2-2-1) held much of the first half possession firing up five of the eight shots firing two of them on Anteater keeper Maddie Newsom.

The 'Eaters (7-5-3, 3-0-2) heated things up in the second half with six shots and three on target to which UCD keeper Alexis Smith was up to the task including punching away one of her saves in the 89th minute from Shelby Lee, and the rebound fell to Kelsee Pottorff whose header was a little too hot sending a shot ovre the bar, and the match overflowed into overtime still in a scoreless tie.

Both sides had chances in each overtime period, but UCI was the only side to put anything on frame directing three of their four extra-time strikes onto Smith, but the keepers reigned the day keeping both offenses silent in the 0-0 draw.

Newsom came away with three saves in all leaving her two shy of 200 for her career. She did pick up her second shutout of the year. Her counterpart, Alexis Smith, stopped seven shots of the 13 faced from UC Irvine.

UC Davis held the slight advantage in corners, 5-4, as well as fouls, 13-10, while both program were called offside five times. Three cards were issued, all yellow, with the Anteater bench receiving one along with junior Jessica Miclat.

UCI remains unbeaten in Big West play at 3-0-2, and its 11 points keep the squad on top of the standings as the weekend concludes. Overall, UC Irvine is 7-5-3 on the season and has built as streak of seven straight unbeaten at 5-0-2.

The 'Eaters return home for their next match, their final home match of the regular season, on Thursday, Oct. 18 against CSUN. The program will celebrate its seniors during the match and hold a ceremony for them following the match.

NOTES: Maddie Newsom has gone 175 minutes without allowing a goal topping her previous high of 173 minutes that was set this season...the match was the fifth in a row that UCI played into a second overtime period, winning three and drawing twice
