Box Score IRVINE, Calif. – Stephanie Nguyen won at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles but it wasn't enough as UC Irvine came up just short in a 4-3 loss to Grand Canyon Saturday afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

UCI (0-1) won the doubles point and took Nos. 2 and 5 singles, however GCU (3-2) won No. 1, 3 and 4 singles to knot the game, 3-3.

It came down to the No. 6 singles match between UCI's Gillian Parker and GCU's Kylie Waschuk. Parker took the first set but could not hang on ultimately falling, 6-7 (0-3), 7-5, 6-1.

"As per usual with Grand Canyon it all came down to the last match," said head coach Elizabeth Ferris. "We had chances to close it out in the second set, but GCU's player hung on and pulled through, credit to her".

The duo of Vivien Dvali and Nguyen won No. 1 doubles over Waschuk and Emilia Occhipinti, 6-2. Flora Amiri and Yulin Chen took a 6-4 decision over Valentina Mokrova and Celina Buhr at the No. 2 spot.

"I was pleased with how focused and disciplined we came into doubles play. Our shot selection and footwork was sharp," added Ferris.

Buhr defeated Amiri at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-4 while Occhipinti beat Chen in the No. 4 spot, 6-2, 6-2.

Nguyen defeated Mokrova on court two, 6-4, 6-2 and Arianna Tilbury came from behind to defeat the Lopes' Ludouica Indantino 6-7 (5-0), 6-3, 6-0.

"Nguyen's win was a direct result of her carrying her mindset from doubles into her singles play," said Ferris. "Arianna had some hesitation in the first set, but was unphased from losing it. She made minor tweaks quickly to turn her match around. We saw the players executing a lot of what we have been working on in practice: being reliable, staying in the moment, doing whatever it takes to win points, strong footwork, and focusing on the basics. We still need to fine tune our games and have the belief that our shots will be there".

UCI fell in No. 1, 4 and 6 singles to ultimately drop the match.

The Anteaters will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to San Diego State for a match set to start at 12:00 p.m.
