'Eaters Finish Strong at UW Invitational

SEATTLE, Wash. –
The UC Irvine women's indoor track & field team concluded action at the two-day UW Invitational Saturday at Dempsey Indoor.
 
Senior Persis William-Mensah was the top collegiate finisher and overall runner-up in the 60m dash (7.44). She advanced to the nine-woman final with a second-place showing in the preliminary round where she clocked in at 7.42 seconds.
 
Junior Hope Bushnell took second in the 60m qualifying round (7.71), before finishing 12th in the prelims (7.76).
 
Senior Tyra Jones and junior Mychal Robinson both placed among the top-10 to advance out of the 60m hurdle qualifying round. Jones then came in 11th in the prelims, just three spots behind the last individual to qualify for the final. Jones notched a lifetime-best 8.69, which moves her up one spot to No. 3 in school history. Robinson was 16th (8.91).
 
Freshman Mikayla Scott had an impressive performance in her first collegiate 400m race as she finished 19th overall in 57.04 seconds. Scott's time ranks third in program history. Senior Simone Buchanan added a top-30 showing (57.86).
 
Junior Hallie Pullum made her season debut in the 800m, crossing the finish line in 2:23.41 (54th). Sophomore Anastasia Karnaze also led a quartet of Anteaters in the mile with a season-best 5:14.79 (65th).
 
In the field events, junior Elizabeth Akindele improved on her personal best in the shot put by nearly three inches with a toss of 44-08.25. She remained at No. 3 on UCI's all-time charts. 
 
UC Irvine will take a week off from competition before making its way to Albuquerque, N.M., for the Don Kirby Invitational, Feb. 9-10.
