Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine men's tennis team split its doubleheader on Sunday as it fell to Grand Canyon, 4-1, before bouncing back with a 4-0 sweep over UC San Diego at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
 
Both contests were a clinch format, when one team reached four points the dual match was over and any matches in progress were stopped. Missing three of its top players due to illness, UCI falls to 1-2 on the season.

UCI took an early lead after winning the doubles point but lost four straight singles matches to ultimately drop the contest. The duo of Luis Lopez and Mason Hansen defeated Lorenzo Fucile/Mathieu Rajaonah, 6-3, at the top spot before Vastal Bajpai and Bruce Man-Son-Hing earned a 6-3 decision over Lucas Grego/Leo Andreolli at No. 3. On court two, GCU's Gregoire Balenci and Valentin Lang had a 5-3 advantage over Luca Maquard and Sasha Krasnov but the match was not completed.
 
The Lopes earned wins at the No. 4, 3, 1 and 5 spots to grab the victory. Bajpai had an early lead but could not hang on, dropping a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 decision to Balenci at No. 5, allowing GCU to clinch the match.
 
Antoine Barthe led Freddie Grant on court six, 6-4, 5-5, before the dual was completed.

UC Irvine bounced right back with a 4-0- sweep of UC San Diego (0-1) in its afternoon match.
 
The tandem of Bajpai and Man-Son-Hing set the tone winning their second-straight doubles competition of the day, defeating Justin Zhang/Eric Tseng, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot. Krasnov and Barthe followed with a 6-4 victory over Richard Han/Neil Tengbumroong on court three.
 
In singles, Bajpai got things started for the 'Eaters with a 6-3, 6-3, win over Han at No. 4. Barthe put UCI up 3-0 after a 6-4, 7-5 triumph on court five and Takern Wantabe delivered the final blow to the Tritons, taking down Tengbumroong 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6.
 
Lopez (4-6, 6-3), Krasnov (6-3, 4-6) and Hansen (6-1, 5-7) were still in action on courts one, two and three, respectively, when Wantabe clinched the match for UCI.

UC Irvine returns to the court for a match against No. 5 USC Saturday, Feb. 10 at 10:00 a.m. PT.
