The UC Irvine men's tennis team kicks off the 2018 season with a road match against San Diego Friday, January 19 at 10:30 a.m. The 'Eaters host Grand Canyon in their home-opener Sunday, January 21 at 9:00 a.m. followed by a match against UC San Diego at 2:00 p.m.
TOP 10 HITS
UC Irvine played in three fall tournaments during the months of September and October. Heim, Lopez and Marquard qualified to play in the prestigious ITA All-American Championships to kick off the fall season. Heim reached the qualifying singles round before falling to No. 75 Logan Staggs of UCLA (6-1, 6-4).
The duo of Heim and Lopez also played together in the ITA Southwest Regional Championships where they came up short in the quarterfinal round.
LEAVE IT ALL ON THE COURT
After missing 17 matches over the last two seasons due to injury, senior Sebastian Heim is ready to make his last campaign as an Anteater one to remember. The Speyer, Germany native earned an ITA preseason ranking of No. 114 and will look to lead UCI at the top of the lineup.
SUMMER HOMEWORK
Junior Luis Lopez competed in the 2017 ITA Summer Circuit where he won three of six Southern California tournaments to advance to the ITA National Summer Championships.
GET TO KNOW THE 'EATERS
UC Irvine returns six players and welcomes three newcomers, including one freshman and two transfers. Sophomore Daniel Gealner comes to Irvine from UCLA, while junior Sasha Krasnov spent the past two years at Cerritos College. Antonie Barthe is the only true freshman in the mix, hailing from Rueil-Malmaison, France.
Five of the nine Anteaters on the roster are California natives, as the remaining four players are international products. Heim and Marquard are natives of Germany while Barthe comes from France and Krasnov is a product of Ukraine.
VERSUS THE OPPONENTS
In its last meeting against the Toreros, UCI fell, 6-1, on Feb. 25, 2017. Marquad earned the Anteaters single point after taking down 79th-ranked Filip Vittek at the No. 1 singles spot.
UCI met Grand Canyon and UCSD in a doubleheader Feb. 4, 2017. The 'Eaters fell to GCU, 4-1, before bouncing back with a 4-0 sweep over UC San Diego.
