Anteaters Turned Away at UC Davis, 2-0

DAVIS, Calif. --- UC Irvine could not bring in any goals or Big West points in the opener to the conference season falling, 2-0, Thursday afternoon to UC Davis at Aggie Soccer Field.

The Aggies (4-5-1, 1-0-0) held the upper hand in the first half with the first three shots and seven of the nine overall shots while UC Irvine (5-4-1, 0-1-0) was called offside on five occasions, however the score remained even at 0-0 through 45 minutes.

The scoring came early in the second half as UC Davis cut through the Anteater defense in the 47th minute with Adam Mickelson setting up Justin Wright to finish inside the right post and make it 1-0, Aggies.

Both sides fought for a pivotal second goal including the best chance from the 'Eaters in the 60th minute. A feed into the box caught Christian Carrillo whose jumping flick was knocked aside by Davis keeper Wallis Lapsley to keep their advantage.

UC Davis broke through for an insurance goal in the 75th minute as Mickelson was on the receiving end this time heading home a Miguel Acevedo cross to go up 2-0 and see that lead out for the victory.

The Anteaters let another Big West opener by without collecting any points now at 5-4-1 overall on the season. They were outshot 13-8 on the evening putting four shots on frame. Waldron matched the Aggie keeper with four saves of his own.

UCI will look for a split up north with a second match coming Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at Sacramento State.
