FIRST TOUCHES
430 -Â UC Irvine saw its shutout streak end at
430 minutes with the opening goal Friday at LMU. It's the fourth such streak to surpass 400 minutes in the program's history. The all-time mark still stands at 597 minutes without allowing a goal in 1988
100th -Â Thursday's match at USD marks the
100th all-time meeting between UC Irvine and a West Coast Conference member. UCI has 30 wins against the WCC including seven against the Toreros
114 -Â Head Coach
Scott Juniper became the all-time winningest coach in UC Irvine women's soccer history with a 1-0 shutout of Oregon on Sunday. His
114th win surpassed Marine Cano for the all-time mark. His career record currently stands at
114-73-24
LAST WEEK RECAP
The Anteaters continued their unbeaten run against a pair of high-quality opponents starting off with a draw at LMU. The Lions had been on a tear themselves, and opened up the scoring in the 11th minute.
Kiana Palacios tied things in the 60th minute, and despite a 22-10 shot advantage for the 'Eaters, no other shots found the back of the net and the match would remain tied for a 1-1 draw through 110 minutes.
Â
Sunday was a game added to the ledger just two weeks ago after Oregon had a match at Texas A&M canceled from Hurricane Harvey. Sunday also saw the return of
Grayson Galbraith to the starting lineup, and she paid dividends heading home a
Reema Bzeih cross in the 37th minute. The 1-0 lead would hold up behind the team's fifth shutout of the season and three
Maddie Newsom saves pushing the record to 3-1-3 and getting career win No. 114 for head coach
Scott Juniper now the most wins by a coach in program history.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
The Anteaters return to their run of WCC opponents as they will finish off non-conference play with four straight matches against them starting with San Diego and Pepperdine.
Â
USD has a new head coach this season in well-decorated Louise Lieberman from UCLA. It's been tough sledding to a 1-5 record scoring once in the five defeats while taking a win from Denver, 3-1. Last week, LBSU scored a 3-0 victory on the Toreros who have mustered up just over five shots a match and no second half goals. Summer Mason is the cog in the offense with nearly half the team's shots and shots on goal. Amber Michel has been tested in net stopping 28 shots.
Â
The week closes out in Anteater Stadium as UCI and Pepperdine square off for the first time since 2012 when the Waves crushing UCI, 4-0, in a neutral site match at UCLA. Pepperdine and UCLA will face each other Friday before they head to Irvine. The Waves are 4-2-1 so far with decisive wins over Texas Tech and Northwestern while drawing with Virginia Tech and taking Texas A&M to overtime. Pepperdine has been less successful on the road with just one win away from home in four matches. The defense carries the torch mirroring UCI with three goals allowed in seven matches led by Hailey Harbison and Jaime Van Horn in front of junior keeper Brielle Preece. Freshman Devyn Gilfoy has burst onto the scene with four goals and two game-winners early in her career helped by turning 12 of her 15 shots on frame.
HIKING UP RECORD MOUNTAIN
Sunday's win propelled head coach
Scott Juniper into the program's top spot all-time in wins with 114. He surpassed Marine Cano who won 113 over 12 seasons with the program. Scott's Sunday win over Oregon was his eighth over a Pac-12 program to add to other premier wins over Texas A&M, Auburn, Oklahoma, BYU, Wake Forest, and Portland and five wins over ranked squads his teams have accomplished.
Â
"Goes without saying that there's just tons and tons of people, players, coaches, administrators that have all done their part in those wins so its a nice milestone for a lot of different people who are involved. I like to think that milestones are like seeing a bear on a hike: pretty cool for a moment, but you better keep moving because there's something a lot cooler around the corner or over the next peak so we'll enjoy it for the moment, but will move on pretty quick."
