'Eaters Open Anteater Stadium Drawing Penn State, 1-1

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine and Penn State battled for 110 minutes Friday night in Anteater Stadium, and between a flurry of cautions came a 1-1 draw.

Penn State (0-1-1) came out the aggressor early in the first half before the 'Eaters (1-1-1) found their legs, and it would pay off in the 32nd minute. Sam Bollinger's cross back into the box was helped along by Austin Maloney to Aaron Molloy who was free to settle, gather, and curl a shot into the upper right 90 and give the Nittany Lions the 1-0 lead. UC Irvine picked up the offense with some shots toward the cage, but couldn't crack the PSU line and remain down a goal at the half.

Penn State continued to build their card count after being issued two in the first half and attained two more early in the second half. The 'Eater offense would break through in the 67th minute on some tactical precision. Mario Ortiz found a lane along the touchline and chipped a ball across the box to Giovanni Godoy. His header returned back to the left post to find a wide-open Christian Carrillo on the doorstep to head it down and in to tie things up at 1-1.

Soon after, Penn State's chippiness earned it one-to-many yellows as defender and captain Dani Marks drew a second yellow as part of three yellows issued in the 77th minute to put the Lions down a man, and that would ride into the extra period with the score still tied, 1-1.

The initial overtime period was a chess match that neither team flinched at. Both squads put up a great chance late in the frame, but the match was destined for a second overtime. Penn State's confidence rose as it found some chances early in the final frame, but the best opportunity came in the 104th minute as a cross pinballed around before finding Jose Ortiz near the right post whose shot rang off the post keeping the match tied which is where it was finish, 1-1.

The goal for Carrillo marked the first goal and points of his career. Ortiz and Godoy each earned their first assist of 2017. Waldron finished with three saves as he earned the tie in his first match of the year. Lion keeper Evan Finney stopped four shots as the 'Eaters held the slight advantage in shots and corner kicks. There were eight cards in total, six to the Lions as they played a man down for 33 minutes.

"We started hesitant, but grew into the game as it progressed, especially in the second half," noted head coach Yossi Raz making his Anteater Stadium debut. "Obviously, there were a lot of emotions playing at home for the home crowd and the campus and the community, but I was happy how we responded. We could have easily won, but at the same time we could have lost. Penn State exposed us in transition, and that is something we must improve going forward, but there were a lot of positives tonight, and now we look to Sunday and another day to get better."

The Anteaters finish the weekend with a Sunday night match in Anteater Stadium hosting UNC Asheville starting at 7:00 p.m.
