Coaching Staff Introduced for Men's Soccer
August 10, 2017 | Men's Soccer
IRVINE, Calif. --- The calendar has officially flipped over to the 2017 season with practices starting for new Head Coach Yossi Raz and his club, and the staff is in place that is going to guide this year's Anteaters forward.
"One of the things I feel I've done very well in my short time at UC Irvine is build a quality staff. I think they bring a lot of expertise in their fields, they've coached across all divisions, and are a very diverse group."
Assistant coach Matt O'Sullivan, a native of Preston in England, comes from a highly-touted staff at St. Edward's on the Division II level. He was an assistant for them for seven seasons culminating in Division II Regional Staff of the Year recognition in 2016.
"Matt O'Sullivan comes from St. Edward's where he was the top assistant and very influential with the team. He build one of the best defensive teams in Division II if not the best team. He was very hands-on in all aspects of that program - logistically, how he breaks down film, his scouting ability, all of it will be a great addition in how he interacts with the squad."
The program was consistently ranked reaching has high as third nationally, and reached the last three NCAA Tournament entering as the No. 1 seed regionally twice. Prior to that, he began his coaching career at the University of Incarnate Word on the Division II level before making the transition to Division I, but O'Sullivan was integral part of two conference championships and NCAA Tournament berths in three seasons at UIW.
He played for three seasons at CSU Bakersfield pushing them to the Division II Sweet Sixteen in 2004 and leading them in goals and assists in his senior season of 2005. The 2007 graduate earned his degree in exercise science, and followed that up with a Master's in business sports management from UIW.
A second assistant, Cale Rodriguez, comes straight from the head coaching level for the last two seasons where he's been with Peninsula College, a junior college situated in the state of Washington.
"Cale Rodriguez comes from being a head coach, in doing so he understands the importance of a number of different aspects and seeing the bigger picture of the program. He's got a great eye for talent, and he's a local guy having mentored under one of the best coaches in the area in coach Perez."
Rodriguez won back-to-back titles in the Northwest Athletic Conference bringing home Coach of the Year honors in 2016. He honed his craft in the four years prior for his alma mater, the University of Redlands, under U.S. soccer coaching icon, Ralph Perez. He laid the groundwork for three straight conference championships for the Bulldogs, and has also done so with multiple youth successful youth clubs and at UNLV where he spent the 2011-12 season. He recently earned his Master's in Higher Education from Redlands on the heels of an economics degree also from Redlands where he started, captained, and inundated the program's record books as they consistently landed in the national rankings on the way to three conference titles and NCAA Tournament runs.
The third and final assistant, Brian Lanoye, is a veteran of the Big West conference having spent 10 seasons with the program at Cal State Fullerton.
"We've brought on Brian, a goalkeeper expert with 10 years of experience in the Big West, and I feel like he can be very, very good. He's very bright in his field and brings with him a Master's in sport psychology."
Lanoye started as an undergraduate assistant with the Titans quickly becoming a grad assistant and goalkeeper coach by 2010 helped send the Titans to the 2014 tournament behind its Tournament MVP keeper who set and tied multiple school records. Lanoye transitioned to the Division II level the past two seasons under coach Raz's tutelage assisting Cal Poly Pomona to its Division success in the NCAA Tournament. As mentioned, Lanoye brings his Master's in sport psychology along with a bachelor's and master's in kinesiology.
A familiar face closes out the coaching staff in Dallas Jaussi now in his third season with the program.
"We retained Dallas Jaussi as the Director of Soccer Operations who is a great personality and local, up-and-coming coach with ties to the community. He has a strong desire to be the best he can be and learn every day, and he loves UC Irvine soccer."
Jaussi joined the program in 2015, and recently trekked to Houston, Texas to attain his "B" level coaching license.
"Between the four of them, we've assembled a lot of quality that will be able to guide our student-athletes to be successful on and off the field, and ultimately teach the young Anteaters the beautiful game of soccer we're striving to play."
