'Eaters Shine on Senior Day

IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine men's track & field team earned four event wins to go along with a handful of personal bests on the final day of the Adidas/Steve Scott Invitational Saturday at Anteater Stadium.

UCI swept the relay events, starting with a 4x100 victory. Freshman Evan Singletary, senior Lloyd Sicard, freshman Jordan Gibson and senior Brandon Howard, ran a season-best 40.87, moving the quartet up to No. 2 on the Big West leaderboards.

Sicard, sophomore Paul Resong, Howard and sophomore Isaiah Jewett would also close out the meet with a first-place finish in the 4x400 relay as they improved their conference-leading time to 3:10.79. The 'Eaters went back-and-forth with Grand Canyon, but Jewett pulled through on the anchor leg with a 46.3 split to secure the win.

Jewett was a double champion as he took first in a loaded 800m field earlier in the day. He beat out UC Irvine alum and 2016 Olympian Charles Jock with a personal-record 1:48.22. Jewett remains at No. 3 in program history, behind Jock, the school-record holder at 1:44.67, and Steve Scott (1:47.6). This was the 2017 season opener for Jock.

Senior Brandon Howard was the individual champion in the 400m hurdles where he clocked in with a career-best 51.61. That moves him up to fifth on the Anteaters' all-time charts, while it is also the top time in the Big West this season.

Sicard had an impressive performance in the 110-meter hurdles, running a lifetime-best 13.55 (3.3 wind). He was the top collegiate finisher and overall runner-up, coming in behind only Siddhanth Thingalaya (13.50) of Evo Track Club.

Singletary led the 'Eaters in the 100m as he placed eighth out of 47 with a personal-best 10.71. Gibson (10.78) and senior Antwon Parker (10.94) also notched lifetime bests, finishing 11th and 20th, respectively. Gibson contributed a 14th-place showing in the 200m (21.82), while Parker was 19th with a personal-record 21.96.

Freshman Hector Garcia was the Anteaters' top finisher in the 1500m where he crossed the finish line in a career-best 3:56.15 (10th). Sophomore Paul Resong added a top-10 performance in the 400m (48.84).

In the field events, senior Matt Seawright advanced to the discus final and placed ninth overall at 163-02. Daniel Stahl, a 2016 Olympian, won the event with a heave of 209-07.

Junior Jon Dickinson was also ninth in the shot put with a distance of 47-10.

UCI honored its seven seniors – David Aguilar, Nolan Del Valle, Brandon Howard, Izzak Mireles, Antwon Parker, Matt Seawright and Lloyd Sicard – in their final home meet.

UC Irvine will send a small group to the Occidental Invitational on Saturday, May 6, before the Big West Championships in Fullerton, May 12-13.
