FULLERTON, Calif. --- UC Irvine couldn't get out of its own way as walks and errors made it difficult against 14th-ranked Cal State Fullerton Friday night as the Titans took the series opener, 5-3, at Goodwin Field.
The Titans (25-14, 7-3) jumped out to the early advantage scoring twice in the second inning and once again in the third to lead 3-0 with all the runs coming home via walks to leadoff each frame, and Anteater starter Chris Vargas lasted just one batter into the third inning before being taken out.
UCI (15-24, 2-8) showed a lot of promise coming back from an early 3-0 hole with scoring with two outs in the fifth and seventh to tie the game up at 3-3, but another walk and an error on a sac bunt put two runners in scoring position with nobody out that CSF would cash in and go up for good and win, 5-3.
Freshman Ryan Johnston was on the tough-luck end of the decision suffering his second loss despite a masterful relief performance of 4+ innings leaving the game allowing three hits and no runs. Reliever Michael Martin allowed his inherited runner to score and a follow-up unearned run before settling in with a pair of strikeouts on the evening and keeping UCI in the game late.
The 'Eaters couldn't figure out closer Brett Conine who retired all five batters he faced for the save helping Connor Seabold score his sixth win after scattering 12 hits over 7.1 innings.
UCI got a much-needed offensive boost from Adam Alcantara who returned to the lineup after a 10-game absence with a single, double, run scored, and was hit by a pitch. He along with Keston Hiura, Parker Coss, and Alex Guenette each had two-hit games for the 'Eaters. Guenette scored a run along with Adrian Damla while Parker Coss had an RBI.
Mikey Duarte provided a big, two-run double in the fifth with two outs to close the gap to 3-2 at the time. Fullerton's big run-producers were Dillon Persinger and Chris Hudgins who each had two RBI as the Titans made the most of their hits with all singles on the evening.
The squads meet up against on Saturday with another 7:00 p.m. start, and the game will be broadcasted nationally at ESPNU.
