IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's track & field team returns home this weekend as it hosts the 23rd annual adidas/Steve Scott Invitational, April 28-29.
The meet will get underway with several field events on Friday, starting with the hammer throw at 2 p.m., while the steeplechase (7 p.m.) and 5000m (7:30 p.m.) will be contested in the evening. A full day of action is slated for Saturday, beginning with the 4x100 relay at noon.
The 'Eaters will also honor their seniors - David Aguilar, Nolan Del Valle, Brandon Howard, Antwon Parker, Matt Seawright and Lloyd Sicard - on Saturday. The ceremony will begin at 5:10 p.m., prior to the final event of the weekend.
Over 1,000 athletes will converge on Anteater Stadium this weekend. Some of the nation's best are entered in this year's adidas/Steve Scott Invitational, including 2016 Olympian and UCI alum Charles Jock in the 800m.
"This is one of the more competitive meets that we will compete in because of the field sizes and level of talent in those fields," head coach Jeff Perkins said. "It is also a tune-up for us two weeks out from conference, so we will be looking to sharpen up and get out of the meet what we need to in order to feel confident going into the Big West Championships."
The adidas/Steve Scott Invitational is named after Steve Scott, a three-time Olympian and six-time All-American in track and cross country at UC Irvine from 1974-78. He has run the mile in under four minutes a world-record 136 times in his career. Scott still holds the Anteater record in the 1500m (3:36.1) and ranks No. 2 in program history in the 800m (1:47.6). A member of the United States Track & Field Hall of Fame, and one of the original inductees into the UCI Athletics Hall of Fame, Scott is currently the head track/cross country coach at Cal State San Marcos.
UCI'S ELITE: UC Irvine's top-three 800m runners will all be in attendance at the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational on Saturday. Charles Jock, who graduated in 2012, is the school record holder at 1:44.67. He broke Steve Scott's 33-year old record of 1:47.6 as a junior. Current sophomore Isaiah Jewett is right on their heels as he ranks third with a career-best 1:48.43. Jewett and Jock will both be competing in Section 1 of the 800m, while Scott will be present as the head coach of Cal State San Marcos and as the honorary starter for the 1500m. Scott still holds the Anteaters' 1500m record at 3:36.1, which he set in 1977.
ALL WE DO IS WIN: The Anteaters have combined for 17 event wins (including relays) this season. Isaiah Jewett leads the way with five individual victories as he is unbeaten in three 800m and two 400m races. Lloyd Sicard has also finished ahead of the pack in the 110H four times. In addition, Sicard has been a part of all five first-place relay teams, with Jewett joining him in a trio of 4x400 triumphs.
LEAVING A LEGACY: Senior Lloyd Sicard continues to add on to his impressive resume in his final collegiate campaign. He earned his sixth career Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week honor after coming away with victories in the 110H and 4x400 relay at the UC Riverside Spring Classic Invitational. Sicard then set a season best in the 110H at the Mondo Team Challenge (13.87), and again at the Big West Challenge where he clocked in with a meet-record 13.74. That time ranks first in the Big West, eighth in the West Region and 15th in the NCAA this year. The Gardena, Calif., native is the reigning co-Big West Track Athlete of the Year and two-time defending conference champion in the 110H where he owns the school record at 13.60. He advanced to the NCAA Championships as a sophomore and junior, while qualifying for the NCAA West Prelims all three years. Sicard also competed among the nation's best this past summer as he was one of 32 athletes to earn a spot in the 110H at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
THREE CHEERS FOR JEWETT: Sophomore Isaiah Jewett picked up his third Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week award after winning the 800m collegiate open section at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays. He finished first in a field of 50 competitors with a personal-record 1:48.43. That bumped him up two spots to No. 3 in school history as he now sits behind only Olympians Charles Jock and Steve Scott on the all-time list. Jewett also earned back-to-back honors on March 14 and 21. He snagged his second-straight accolade after his 800m performance at the UCI Spring Break Collegiate Classic where he won the event in a then lifetime-best 1:49.14. Previously, the Inglewood, Calif., native was recognized for his 400m victory at the Ben Brown Invitational (47.38). Jewett went on to top that performance at the Mondo Team Challenge with a time of 46.82. He ranks first in the Big West in both the 400m and 800m.
AROUND THE HORN: Senior Matt Seawright established a personal record in the hammer throw at the Big West Challenge (204-04) and then again at the Beach Invitational (205-06) … Seawright was a 2016 NCAA West Preliminary qualifier in the hammer and discus and also ranks among the top-five in school history in both events … Freshman Hector Garcia earned his first collegiate victory at the Mondo Team Challenge where he finished ahead of the 1500m pack in a lifetime-best 3:56.37 … Junior Jon Dickinson set a personal-best 169-09 in the hammer on April 7, putting him at No. 10 among UCI's all-time leaders … In his first collegiate race, freshman Jordan Gibson ran UC Irvine's fastest 200m time of the season at the UCR Spring Classic Invitational (21.79) … The 'Eaters have a young team with 65 percent of their roster being comprised of underclassmen (10 freshmen, seven sophomores).
UP NEXT: UC Irvine will make its way to the Occidental Invitational (May 6), before heading to Fullerton for the Big West Championships, May 12-13.
