'Eaters Finish Second at Cal Poly Shootout

 

   David Kim earned medalist honors at the 2017 Cal Poly Shootout.

 

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. --- UC Irvine finished second and junior David Kim earned medalist honors in the Cal Poly Shootout that concluded Tuesday at Cypress Ridge Golf Club in Arroyo Grande.

The Anteaters finished with a 54-hole total of 1,082 in the 6-count-5 format.  UC Santa Barbara won the title at 1,058 and Cal Poly was third at 1,083.

Kim birdied the last hole, the par-5 18th, to win the individual title by one shot with a three-round score of 8-under 208 to finish ahead of New Mexico State's Luis Medina at 209.  Kim shot an even-par 72 in Tuesday's final round and Medina a 76.

It was the second collegiate title for Kim, who previously won the Pacific Invitational in November 2015, and the 11th top-10 finish of his career. 

Kim, who has seven top-10s this season, led the field at the Cal Poly Shootout in par-3 scoring at 3-under and he tied for first in tournament birdies with 16.

Senior Bryan Shin placed third in the Shootout at 6-under 210 after carding an even-par 72 Tuesday.  He tied for first in the field in par-5 scoring at 9-under.

Junior Ryan O'Connor shot a 75 in the final round and finished 17th at 217, junior Jonathan Young (74) placed 26th at 222, freshman Jonathan Kang (74) was 44th at 229 and sophomore Chris Parkinson (82) 49th at 233.

Coach Paul Smolinski's Anteaters compete in the Big West Championship at Sandpiper Golf Course in Santa Barbara May 1-3.
