BACK TO FULLERTON
This is the first year UC Irvine is competing in Cal State Fullerton's Ben Brown Invitational since the 2013 season. The Anteaters return to the annual meet in preparation for the 2017 Big West Championships, which will also be held at Titan Track Complex.
LAST TIME OUT
UC Irvine swept the relay events in a strong start to the outdoor season at the All-UC Championships last Saturday at Triton Track & Field Stadium. Seniors Lloyd Sicard, Antwon Parker and Brandon Howard, along with junior Michael Hamill, combined to win the 4x100 relay in 41.61 seconds. In the 4x400, Sicard, Parker and sophomores Paul Resong and Isaiah Jewett finished ahead of the pack in 3:13.22. Sicard also claimed runner-up honors in the 100m where he notched a lifetime-best 10.64, which is tied for 10th in program history.
"The team did very well for what we as a staff had projected them to do individually," UCI head coach Jeff Perkins said after the meet. "We are happy to start our season the way we did and look forward to the challenges we have coming up in the month of March."
SICARD SETS THE BAR
Senior Lloyd Sicard will be looking to add on to an already impressive resume in his final season. The Gardena, Calif., native is the reigning co-Big West Track Athlete of the Year and two-time defending conference champion in the 110m hurdles. He also advanced to the NCAA Championships as a sophomore and junior, while qualifying for the NCAA West Preliminaries all three years. In addition, Sicard had a chance to compete among the nation's best this past summer as he was one of 32 competitors to earn a spot in the 110H at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
JUST THROWING IT OUT THERE
Senior Matt Seawright enters his second and final season at UC Irvine as one of the team's top throwers. In his first year at the Division I level, after transferring from Cerritos College, Seawright qualified for the 2016 NCAA West Prelims in both the discus and the hammer. He also scored in three events at the Big West Championships as he earned all-conference honors in the discus (3rd), while finishing fourth in the hammer and sixth in the shot put. Seawright ranks third in school history in the hammer with a lifetime-best 203-02.
BACK FOR MORE
Senior Brandon Howard is coming off a breakout season where he was a two-time All-Big West performer as the runner-up in the 400m hurdles and as a member of the third-place 4x100 relay squad. At the conference meet, Howard ran the ninth-fastest 400H time in program history as he clocked in at a personal-record 52.22 seconds. That qualified him for the NCAA West Preliminaries where he placed 31st overall (52.68).
