Coward Named Big West Women's Field Athlete of the Week

IRVINE, Calif. – UC Irvine sophomore Barbara Coward earned the first Big West Women's Field Athlete of the Week award for the 2017 season the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.

Coward was recognized following an impressive performance at the All-UC Challenge in La Jolla last Saturday. The Atwater, Calif., native won the discus at 177-10, a mark that broke her own school record by six feet, one inch. She also obliterated the meet record by over 12 feet.

In addition, Coward was the runner-up in the hammer throw with a personal-best 176-06, which moved her up two spots to No. 3 in program history.

"We are very excited for Barbara's performance in the discus," UCI head coach Jeff Perkins said after the All-UC Challenge. "I could not be more happy to see someone work as hard as she has to achieve a new school record, meet record and NCAA qualifier in the first meet of the season. She is headed down the path that Coach (Katelyn) Ciarelli has planned for her and will be fun to watch this year."

This is Coward's first career weekly honor.

UC Irvine continues the outdoor season at the Ben Brown Invitational in Fullerton on Saturday, March 11.
