IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine senior guard Luke Nelson has been named to the All-District 9 second team by the National Association of Basketball Coaches for the 2016-17 season.
Nelson led the Anteaters with a 16.9 scoring average this season, recording six 20-point games, and he also topped the team with 30 steals despite missing 18 games due to injury. He scored a season-high 29 points twice, in a Feb. 11 win at Hawai'i and a March 4 home victory over UC Davis.
He was named Big West Conference Player of the Year and was selected to the all-conference first team for the second consecutive season. Nelson was also an All-Big West Tournament member for the third straight year.
Nelson ranks No. 1 in UCI history with 258 threes and he is fourth all-time in the Anteater record book with 1,531 points and 415 assists. He is fifth in program history with 145 steals.
He was part of the senior class, along with Jaron Martin and Ioannis Dimakopoulos, that won 93 games in four seasons and advanced to the postseason each of those years under head coach Russell Turner.
UCI was 21-15 overall this season and won the Big West regular-season title with a 12-4 mark. The Anteaters have won outright, or shared, the league's regular-season championship three of the past four years.
