IRVINE, Calif. – UC Irvine was led by their big men in a 91-52 victory over Chapman at the Bren Events Center Tuesday night.
The Anteater post players led the way with sophomore forward Tommy Rutherford posting a career-high 19 points on 9-12 shooting and junior forward Jonathan Galloway and sophomore center Brad Greene recording double-doubles. Galloway had a game-best 14 rebounds, which tied his career-high to go with a career-high 11 points and four blocked shots, while Greene had a career-highs in points (15), rebounds (10) and blocked shots (5).
John Edgar Jr. also totaled double-figure points with 12. All 12 UCI players that saw action scored at least three points with nine of them also grabbing at least one rebound. The Anteaters shot 49.3 percent from the floor (35-71) and owned the glass, out-rebounding the Panthers 52-29. UCI scored 54 points in the paint and had 12 blocks shots.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Evan Leonard and Max Hazzard ignited a 17-3 run that was capped by an Eyassu Worku jumper at 12:18 to put the Anteaters ahead 19-5. The Anteaters would build a 48-22 lead at the half.
UCI scored the first four points of the second half to extend the lead to 52-22 then had a 76-37 advantage following a pair of Jonathan Galloway free throws at 7:12. The lead would never dip below 33 the rest of the game as Teo Davidian would lay in the final point for the 39-point victory. Â Â
UC Irvine heads back on the road, traveling to Kansas State Friday (Nov. 17) for a 6:00 p.m. PT start then on to Arizona State Sunday (Nov. 19) for an 11:00 a.m. tip. Both games are the part of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic.
